First suggestion is good old paper maps and a simple GPS app on your phone so you can place yourself on the map. Never go without this backup.
I am running a 7" tablet with a few different apps. Some are better than others but HEMA maps was built specifically for offroading but is newer so still a little buggy. Gaia GPS is a good topo based program made more for hiking but does the job well.
Magellan did release a tablet sized GPS specifically for the 4x4/ATV/UTV markets called the TRX that is water and dust resistant without a case. I have not used this product but I can see where it might be more stable than an app on a random tablet.
