I thought I should give people and update of the latest discussion with the Forest Service about our adopted trail. If anyone has any questions I will answer them here and/or at the next meeting.
Short Version: I am planning to meet with people at the forest service to discuss specific actions on the trail and coordinating actions for summer of 2017 sometime soon. 4 areas of repairs are called for and the details of each are being worked on. No planned re-opening date yet. If anyone in the club, or previous members who are still local, works with grading equipment or road building please let me know. I am trying to meet with FS staff in the near and would like to have someone who understands the boots-on-the-ground side of earthwork as opposed to my book-learn'n on the subject.
Long Version: On the fall maintenance run I took a bunch of pictures and gps locations to verify the locations of the proposed actions on the trail. In addition to the standard report which I sent to Kyle after a maintenance run I wrote a comment letter on the specific location and actions being called for to repair the trail. The 4 repair areas were reduced from 7 or 8 in the original survey which was revised when a second site visit found that some of the conditions weren't subject to the wetlands issue.
Of the proposed repairs 2 are truly wetland issues and the other 2 are projects I agree need to happen to prevent erosion issues from hurting the trail in the future. The projects in order from 88 to 50 are as follows. 1) Stream crossing on the 88 side. There is a small stream that is crossed and there is poor grading on the 50 side exit from the stream which can easily be fixed. We would add a water bar or two and put some big rocks in the stream to keep people from turning up or down stream (not likely a big issue but easy to keep everyone happy). 2) The section of trail with the narrow rim scratching rock where the water bar has eroded so the winter water turns on flows down the trail. This isnt a meadow but a few water bars or maybe a culvert would easily fix the issue. 3) Meadow near the spur A turnoff. Clearly a wetland and the biggest of the projects. This is one I am trying to get more details from the forest service on the proposed actions. 4) Wet area near V-rock. This is a concern for as we cant allow repairs to alter the difficulty of the trail. This is the biggest one I am trying to get details on and am trying to schedule a call or meeting to specifically discuss the proposed work.
I also drove one of the old spur trails and had Kevin and Jeff check out another couple of the spurs. Since then in talking with Brad there is at least one other spur and possibly 2 other spurs we need to check out. I was able to get pictures and GPS tags of 2 high quality dispersed camping sites located on spurs with no obvious erosion or wetland issues. The goal is to get any spurs with camp sites which pose no management issues officially recognized. I feel that with the trail being closed for so long that there will be a fair bit of camping demand on the trail when the trail re-opens.
I am thinking we should try to get the forest service to sign a TMO (trail management objectives) agreement with the Club which makes our relationship with the trail more official. A TMO would also set the trail difficulty and oblige us to maintain that difficulty (by closing bypasses, moving rocks when necessary, etc.).

Kris I'm available most weekends now. I'm eager to lend a hand on this project. I'll start asking around my construction friends and try to find someone with some road experience. hopefully its a person that is also a wheeling enthusiast.

Kris, feel free to contact Dan Baldoni of Baldoni Contstruction for any questions you have about road construction. Dan is a friend of mine so please be sure to mention my name. I will shoot him an email so he will have a heads up if you contact him. Dan does a lot for the community so I'm sure he would be happy to assist you. Dan is a mild mannered and super nice guy.
