The best part of the day [for me] was the drive to meet everybody at Fresh Pond. Driving along Hwy 49 through the canyon was spectacular. The weather was perfect, there was a mist hanging on the hills, the trees were changing their colors, and there were deer running around everywhere. It was a very cool drive 8)
I used to wheel a lot. . .

I'm pretty sure all dirt roads in the ENF are closed from Jan 1 to March 31 after the new EIR per here: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/eldora.....tions/ohv/

Larry wanted to try to tug the base twards the uphill side with a snatch block setup. Which, when you think about it, seems like a pretty safe way to give that base a really good tug. There would be very little chance of the top falling against the tug strap so you could use a pretty stout rope to pull with and if the base did fall it wouldn't roll down the hill.

Isn't the base still attached to the roots? I doubt you're going to move it with a winch. Unless there's a tree right up hill that's also going to put someone darn close to it. I'm not sure you could pull it hard enough to move it unless you climb up pretty high to set your rope. 😯 That thing has stayed up through some good wind, it's going to take a pretty good pull to move it. I say we make it the next Red Dog run and shoot it out! 😈

You underestimate our rope tossing ability 😈 We were able to move the base of the tree pretty well with a rope strapped up high. I think we were just pulling the wrong direction to get the top dislodged. We did manage to get the top section sperated more than it was, which may help it come down this winter. :
