Just filled up, I got 25.3 on the last tank without the bike on the roof with 10% ethanol. I am hoping the ethanol is accounting for some the rest of the drop (my mileage in cali was actually up around 28.5-29 consistently. I think maybe the oil is the rest.

Geez...it would have been cheaper to ship the bike than strap it to the roof. That's an amazing difference.

Do we have much ethanol in our fuel out here?

Just curious, were you paying attention to the octane in the fuel? I'd bet it was the switch to the synthetic oil personally, but if you don't pay attention some of the gas stations when you get out of state drop the octane pretty significantly.

Eric runs Super in the 'Lude. I didn't pay attention, but I'm sure it was over 90 the entire time. At one point I think we bought 93.

Get ready for it, in an effort to educate myself I looked on online (which is the new TV of course and I believe everything I read on it) and it looks like MTBE is on the way out...mandates are being passed to use ethanol as the renewable fuel...if I run across the site again I'll send it out.

MTBE was banned in CA because of groundwater problems two (I think) years ago. At least that's what I thought. Time for some research. I can't wait for my mileage to go down with ethanol!!!

MTBE has been out since the early 2000s in CA.

We also have some ethanol in our gas. I think we're around 5-6% We're no where near the E85 that you can get in the Midwest. I'm not sure how much you find in a typical gas as you move across the country. My google skills aren't that good. ๐Ÿ˜€

Interestingly enough, after a little googling, it looks like ethanol is often used as an octane booster. So that premium you're buying may have more ethanol and result in lower mileage???

I don't buy the high grade stuff. This is yet another reason to go cheapo.. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Put regular oil back in it and pray. ๐Ÿ™„

In the Midwest all of the mid-grade stuff was 10% ethanol. It actually made the "Plus" grade of gas cheaper than the regular unleaded, but I don't think it did anything at all for gas mileage. From what I understand, Ethanol is actually more expensive that regular gas as well, being one of the major downfalls of the renewable source.
