Ok, I keep looking at these, seems like a no brainer to help the engine breathe more but my concern would be water ingestion, thinking the likes of a Fordyce first river crossing if we ever have water again
Feels like if the water is close to the hood line on any crossing we probably arent doing it, so the biggest risk is if I make a mistake or do something stupid and well, that's my bad. Theres probably more filter maintenance since most of them no longer have a closed box which is no big deal. Then there is the smog legal or swap the factory one in to get smog'ed question but i think that is mostly a personal decision on which direction I want to go.
What am I not thinking about? Anyone have good/bad experiences running them?

You are right Jamie I was just speaking with a friend of mine who has a smog shop. They told me with cold air system make sure it has a Cal. approval sticker, also California has developed a computer program that can determine if you had a programmer/supper chip ever installed. If so the program would fail your vehicle automatically.

So you can't use a programmer to recalibrate for bigger tires?
I used to wheel a lot. . .

I run a CAI. It is CARB approved, and a K&N. I have zero smog problems. I have submerged the jeep on Fordyce with zero problems.
I run a Superchips programmer that adjusts for tire diameter, and I run an 87 Octane Program. I passed smog in April with no problems. I assume the 87 program does not worsen/affect emissions, or I would have been notified about the installed modification. I only had it during smog because I forgot to remove it. I have always kept the tire correction on my jeep's computer and never had any Smog problems from it. I get better gas mileage with the 87 tune, like 15-20%. Not a small difference, and my motor runs stronger.

Beware of any oiled filters for off-roading. I ran a K&N for a few years then noticed oil and dust in my intake. Paper elements are the best option for dust. Dry foam are ok but will still let more dirt through than paper. What cold air intakes are good for is making your engine louder. Since there isn’t a v6 that sounds good, I will stick with a stock intake.

I read the full update on the new OBD2 regulations on programmer modifications. They are allowing companies to obtain approvals for the flash chips, as well as exemptions. They said most programmers wont be affected.
