I haven't taken my Jeep out all year and yet it broke. My son took my 04 TJ out this weekend to Tuttle Lake off of Fordyce Lake Road (a private lake owned by his friend's family). He was shuttling supplies up and down to the property when my Jeep started making a noise. Long story short, after consulting Kris, I decided to have it towed to a friend of a friend's house who is a Jeep dealer mechanic. After a brief inspection, it appears to be a transfer case problem. It's potentially a stretched chain but we won't know until further investigation.
I have an NP 231 T case with a Taraflex flex 4:1 and a SYE kit. My question is, what should I do?
1. Fix the T case if possible and reasonable in terms of cost?
2. Upgrade to a NV 241 T case (but is it really an upgrade because of my mods to my NP 231?)?
3. Upgrade to an Atlas 2 speed 4.3:1 T case?
4. Other options?
Thanks!

Well heck Jeff sorry to hear it. If rebuilding it is cost prohibitive, the next thing is parts avablity. You can probably pick up a 241relitivly cheap. But if your not in a hurry and you have the funds you can't beat a Atlas II.
I guess what I'm trying to say is it comes down to price, avablity and delivery time.

Gil, I'm trying to assess whether there is enough benefit to justify the cost of an Atlas 2 speed T case. I believe it is stronger but are there any other advantages over my current set up?

For clarification purposes, cost is not an issue. I'm not a hard core wheeler nor do I wheel all that often. So I'm just trying to figure out the best way to deal with this issue. If I were younger I would probably get a 4 door just for the extra passenger/cargo space. My TJ mostly sits in the garage. The mechanic said that my fluid probably got low. I have checked it in the past and it was never low but that's not to say it wasn't low now. So any suggestions would be appreciated.
