So I am almost in the market o buy a new firearm. I've been looking at an AR of some sort. Anybody have any suggestions, knowledge or opinions on whether to build my own or buy a complete? I'm keeping a budget in mind. What do you think of this AR?

I am disappointed in all of you. What happens if we have a zombie apocalypse? I guess I have to wait for Rob to respond.

Personally, I'd go with a snub barrel shotgun on Zombies...

Let me see if i can help you out any.

On your second question of 5.56/.223 vs .308

556 with modern loading is incredible - with the right load (even better if you hand load but factory stuff is avail) you can have a viable california deer gun, a viable 600 yard man stopper, and a fairly inexpensive plinking rifle. The ammo (along with the rifle) is also much cheaper than .308 and more of it can easily be carried.
Now if you need 1000 yard range (mind you the price of the rifle set up would be many times the price of that smith you posted a link to) or you have to do some heavy hitting through barriers then .308 may be the way to go - in my opinion what your looking for is a ar15 556/223 not an ar10 .308

On to the rifle you linked to i will admit i am not a big S&W guy but they know how to make a gun and they make great entry level/standard ARs into the mid grade stuff and i do not think you would go wrong with the one you posted esp at the price and I know with their handguns and im assuming it crosses over to the rifles - they are AMERICAN made with a lifetime warranty.

Lastly the ar is an extremely simple to upgrade firearm with tons of options. If you later down the road wanted to add a forward rail system for forward grips and lights and junk its easy. triggers, sights, stocks its all drop in stuff

- on the shop itself Sac Black Rifle - being as I work in the industry (not at or for Sac Black Rifle) I will tell you they have a great shop and the guys are nice - since there expansion a few weeks ago added some new guys and they are not super knowledgeable as yet but are nice and can answer most questions or will get you the guy that can.

If you have never shot one before or want to shoot one again or some other guns I have one here or there and would have no issues going out and shooting with you

any other question let me know and if i can help I will but just be aware alot of the "gun world" after getting a quality product is all personal preference so dont be afraid to talk to a couple different guys and shoot anything you can shoot it will just get you a better overall idea of what you like.

Thanks Scoped. I had no idea you were in the industry. PM were you work do I can come in and ask the questions I'm scared to ask else where so I don't look like an idiot. 🙂

I have shot several .223's AR's and min 14s. I'm just looking for an overall rifle. Something to plink with, hunt rodents, home defense, and something to personalize my own. I figured the AR would be a good starting platform like you stated. I only posted to black rifle cause I believe they are the only store around that has the "sport" in stock and it's relatively cheap there.

As for a .308, I've never shot one. They look like a fun gun but I think your right that the AR would be a better fit. I was looking at a Saiga .308.

Um...what?

I am not a big fan of Smith and Wesson semi auto weapons. My now retired Colt AR-15 served me well for many years at work. I fired around 100,000 rounds through it over the years, and it never failed me. Just ask John, he has fired many rounds through it also, but I get to use 30 and 40 round detachable magazines in mine.

My most recent purchase for a work rifle is this Wilson Combat "Tactical lightweight" expensive but well worth the money when I depend on it to work when I pull the trigger. I am a big fan of Wilson Combat products. I own two of their 1911 pistols also.

My philosophy is you get what you pay for in a gun. Save for quality instead of impulse buying to save money.

You asked about .223 or 308. You have to decide what you want the rifle for. Do you want it as a potential hunting rifle? If so get the AR-10. If you are looking for a squirrel shooting/target/fun rifle, get the AR-15. The .223 has no recoil what so ever and the ammo is fairly inexpensive compared to shooting a .308.

Caliber needs to be determined by what your intent of the rifle is.

So, I'm having a hard time figuring out what the good brands are. I'm really looking for a base model just to get me shooting and then as I progress I will customize/upgrade down the road.

Black Rifle has a used Stag 2 I believe for $850. - Is buying used a bad idea? I figured the store must do some kind of warranty in it right? Is stag a descent brand?

I've also seen some base model DPMS, Del-Tron, and other off brand store built AR's.

Any brands to stay away from? The guy at the story swore Daniel Defense was the best gun and discouraged me from building my own.

Um...what?

Daniel defense is a top tier manufacture. Delton I would stay away from - stag is great if you want a left handed gun - dpms makes ok entry to mid grade stuff.

Maybe one day we can set up a time and we can go together and I can see if I can help you out - if you can spend about 800 (may be able to do it a bit less if we go ultra cheap on stock and sights) we can just go buy you a lower and order you up some stuff from bravo company - they make great stuff for there price point - if your interested when I get home I can send you a link to some of there stuff and maybe build you up a build sheet

Sorry for the jumble I'm on my phone with this

Thanks for the reply Scoped. I checked out bravo company. They seem to have good stuff for cheap like you said. I'm just looking and learning at the moment. I'll be ready to buy in about 2-3 weeks. Maybe we could get together and I'll buy us pizza or something and you can school me.

If you end up with just a lower, I have an A1 upper with a full float barrel and aluminum forearm. I used it for open sight competitions years ago. It is a Bushmater assembly. It is complete with bolt carrier and all. I would sell it for $150. It would be a start while you build up an A3 upper.

That sounds like a pretty good deal for you - that way you can get out shooting with a basic rifle on the cheap and then decide what you would really want out of your build.

- And if you dont want it (I would not expect the same deal) but I would be interested as I have a lower sitting around doing alot of nothing.
