So I've been wanting to buy a new firearm lately and I am torn on what to buy. I can't decide between a handgun, shotgun or an AR.

I know, those are all very different guns. Well here is some back ground on me to help you help me choose. I don't own a firearm at the moment, so this will be my first. I don't hunt. It's more for fun/ home security, but mostly fun. I have a lot of training in a handgun and a small amount with a shotgun. A couple buddies have AR's and they look/feel really fun. Ammo is very expensive for an AR though. I do backpack a lot so I thought a handgun would be nice for that. I also thought everyone should have a shotgun right?

So what should I do? Once we figure out what to buy then we can talk about wich specific firearm to buy. rasta

Thanks Guys

Um...what?

I'd say a handgun sounds right for you.

A shotgun is good for hunting and only decent for home defense. It has limited capacity and is easier to get taken away from you. It's size would not be benefitial to backpacking either.

An AR can be fun, but with all the limitations that have been put on them it's probably not worth the hassle. Once again, the size will limit it's usefulness as an outdoor companion.

I prefer a hangun for home defense, camping, hking, fishing, and just "plinking." It's easier to go out and practice with it, so you'll become safer with it. And finally, it's easier to keep it handy yet safely locked away from kids.

How about a handgun that also shoots shotgun shells? The Taurus Judge (I think that's the name) is designed for 45's or .410 shotgun shells. I doubt that it excels at either but does have the flexibility.

As far as handguns go, the consensus says to go with the Springfield XP.

I say get handgun. A nice revolver is good for home defense and camping etc.

The Taurus Judge is not legal in CA or I would laready have one. I believe its considered a sawed off shotgun of sorts.
My Dad has a judge and loves it.

Yes, on this forum and others. When it comes to handguns, we defer to Rob for advise.

The Taurus Judge is illegal in California. It is considered a sawed of shotgun.

Most of the other discussion I remember was on another forum. There was a lot of good info, but it went bye bye. 🙁
