EDIT: This run has been postponed pending some snow!
So I’ve been putting off setting up this run for too long. For the past three years I’ve led a snow run around Grass Valley. The last two years have been either New Years Day or shortly thereafter. This year shouldn’t be any different. These runs aren’t for the weak hearted. Plan on 33s and a locker. If that’s a problem for anyone that wants to go PM me and we can work it out or post up and see if you can catch a ride. Nobody drives without proper recovery. These runs have become legendary for their length and inability to accomplish my stated goal. 😀 But, if we don’t get some snow this may turn into a sight seeing mission. My surveyors were up near Bowman today and they didn’t have any problems in a fully loaded Expedition.
In 2009 we tried Chalk Bluff. We got within a mile or two of Highway 20 and got turned around. Most Sacramento folks got home around 10ish I think.
In 2010 we tried to make a gutsy loop around Bowman Lake. We didn’t make it but got some great pictures of Bowman Lake around dusk. Again, home late.
In 2011 we tried to get to Bowman through Graniteville. We barely made Graniteville and the snow was so deep and it was snowing so hard we turned around.
Be prepared for a long day with a lot of fun. Dress warm, bring plenty of food and be prepared!
This years Half Run will be on Sunday, 1/1/12. I’ll follow up with the details as we get closer and we figure out where the snow will be but plan to meet somewhere around Grass Valley on New Years Day!

PS…I’ll have to hitch a ride this year. 🙁

Even if it does snow I may be able to come up with a route that takes us through there then heads for higher ground. We can definitely play it by ear and see how the weather does.

So it doesn't look like we're going to have any snow to play on. I've been doing some asking around and it sounds like there's pretty much no snow anywhere. Weaver Lake (a few hundred feet above Bowman) is readily accessible to anyone - probably even the Manrano. Should we postpone this run? Try somewhere else? John brings his Subaru and I bring my Nissan and we do our best dirt road rally car impressions?

Is there a link to the videos? Can't be any worse than when John and I crossed the off camber ledge on pure ice 😯

Have you seen the videos of the ice as you drop down the the first river crossing? 😯 😯 😯
I would definitely be screaming like a girl.

I got my Jeep fixed, the new soft top will be here Thursday, took my cut tire to Goodyear. They are going to replace it with a new one under warranty but 40 inch MTR's are on national back order. Sue and I might find some where to go on new years with the jeep and dogs.
