Slick Rock, Deer Valley and Strawberry Trail Run Thursday September 12th through Saturday the 14th

Format: This will be a one night or a two night trip depending on your preference.

Date: Thursday September 12th through the 14th (Group A, two nights) or Friday September 13th through the 14th (Group B, one night). Please indicate which group you are going with.

Group A (two nights) will meet on Thursday at the McDonalds in Angles Camp (33 N Main St, Angels Camp) at 8:00 a.m. and will leave at 8:30 a.m. We will Run Slick Rock from south to north and camp at Hermit Valley Campground near the Deer Valley Trailhead. Hermit Valley Campground has vaulted toilets but no water or other facilities

Group B (one night) will meet on Friday at the McDonalds in Angles Camp (33 N Main St, Angels Camp) at 8:00 a.m. and will leave at 8:30 a.m. Group B will meet up with group A at the Hermit Valley Campground at about 10:00 a.m. and both groups will run Deer Valley from south to north. We will camp on the Deer Valley Trail on Friday night. Provided everything goes as planned, we also run the Strawberry Trail from south to north on Saturday.

Please post up if you are going with group A or B. Alternatively some people may want to come up on Thursday afternoon or evening and camp at Hermit Valley Campground with Group A. If so, please indicate this so we know who to expect and when.

This run is open to members and non-members provided they are sufficiently qualified. The usual club minimum requirements apply. If you are running both or all three trails please be sure you have sufficient fuel. You may may need to bring extra fuel depending on your rig.

We will be remote camping on Deer Valley so please come prepared. Fire restrictions may be in effect so fires and charcoal BBQ’s may be prohibited. Gas stoves are permitted when fire restrictions are in effect provided you have a campfire permit which you can get online at http://www.preventwildfireca.o.....re-Permit/

I'm in for group A'   Slick Rock and maybe Deer Valley day trip.  Fiancee will be with me and she made plans for us on Saturday morning so will have to bug out early.  Texted Jeff about it last night.

I should have my Jeep ready this week.

Gil if you need an extra pair of hands/eyes/ears to work on your Jeep I live in EDH  I have Sunday/Monday open.  PM me if you want.

I'm interested, but not sure if which group yet.  I also have a long list of to-do's that need to be completed first, so we'll see.

Where is the last gas?  It's been a long time since I've been up that way.

We will get fuel in Angles Camp and then top off in Arnold. I think, but can't confirm, that you can get fuel in Bear Valley. If so then you could fuel up on Thursday after we run Slick Rock. Once we get out to Hwy 50 there is fuel in Silver Fork which is about 10 miles west of the Strawberry Trail. Can anyone else think of more places to get fuel?

There is also fuel at Kirkwood about 2 miles west of the caples end of strawberry which is about 25 miles on pavement from blue lake dam at the north end of Deer Valley. Everybody gets different mileage in the hills and in 4-low (carbs at elevation suffering the worst).  As long as you have half a tank when you hit Deer Valley then fuel at Silverfork wont be an issue.  Less than half a tank but more than a quarter before Deer Valley and I would run to Kirkwood and put in a few gallons to be safe. Quarter tank or less when you get to deer valley and i would be concerned you have a fuel leak.

Thanks!  Looks like lots of options.  Topping off in Arnold, I should be able to make it to Silverfork with an extra 5 gallon can, the little 304 isn't that thirsty.

Last time I went by the Kirkwood station (about a week ago), it was completely gone.

Wow, that is news to me.  Was there about a month ago.  I will try and find out what happened.  Next closest fuel is Apline Village and markleeville but Meyers is only about 15 miles miles from where Blue Lakes Road hits 88.  Will add 45 to an hour to the trip for meyers but the fuel stop but about $1.50/gal cheaper than Kirkwood or the closer options.

I'll be going by again this coming Sunday or Monday; I'll take a closer (& slower) look & confirm.

I've been waiting to post on here to see if I would be going. Word came down I'm heading to FL Monday morning. If this storm hits hard I'll be gone for a few months.

OK, just wen by the Kirkwood gas station & they moved the pump closer to the hill which I didn't notice last time. It's still in operation, but not sure what hours they operate. The small sign announced it was over $5/Gal (small price to pay if you need it, right?).

I was really looking forward to this trip...But I can't get the time off work due to a scheduling conflict with my boss...How come they always win? Have fun and if anyone is left on the trail on Sunday the 15th, I can bring parts and come get you. cool

Um...what?

We will run Slick Rock on Thursday and camp at Hermit Valley Campground on Thursday night. We will start the Deer Valley trail run on Friday around 10:30 a.am (possibly earlier if there is no group B coming up Friday morning) and we will camp along the trail near the second (southern most) or first (northern most) river crossing on the Deer Valley Trail. On Saturday morning we will break camp at no predetermined time and finish the Deer Valley Trail and then head over and run Strawberry from south to north. If anybody wants to come up on Saturday they could run Strawberry with us but I don't know what time we get to the trail head. If anybody wants to come up Friday afternoon or evening and meet up with us on Deer Valley then they should probably come in on the north end and look for us somewhere between the trail head and the second river crossing. The north section from the trail head to the second river crossing isn't very technical or difficult. They could camp Friday night with us, run the trail back out on Saturday and then do Strawberry on Saturday. Please be sure to post your plans so we know who to expect and when.

I cant take any days off but kyle wants us to patrol the trail so I will head up to Strawberry south on Saturday morning.  I will set up at the corner of Strawberry and Buck Meadow dirtbike trail and hand out maps till y'all come through.  I will have a signin sheet so we can get volunteer hours for the trip.

Does anyone know if there are fire rings at Hermit Valley Campground? Otherwise no fires right? I did get a permit but don't know anything about the campground.

I found it.... Yes, they do have fire rings so fires should be alright with permit. Right???Screenshot_20190907-142254.pngImage Enlarger

Good question. I will call on Monday and find out about fire restrictions for our trip. We will be camping in the Stanislaus and Tahoe or Eldorado National Forests so I will check with both agencies.

Looks like I will be the solo group B person. Will meet you guys at Hermit Valley Friday morning. Bringing the new rig... so this will be a shakedown run for me. Sorry for being "that guy" if anything goes wrong 🙁 It should do both trails just fine... but I just haven't tested any of its off road handling characteristics yet 😉

My vote for Friday night camping is the huge group site just past the north river crossing... it's an awesome spot for groups (and hopefully its open).
