Yeah, these "School Me" topics are fun. Should I start one called "School me on wheeling the Hammers".? π
Justin SubscriberJustin started this SubscriberOh, and if I buy this trailer, I am just going to drive the RV down to pick it up.
John, can the trailer sit at your house for a month, until I get my RV pad cleared of my hard top and military trailer? If not, I will just store it at work.

No, IΓ’β¬β’m going to eat the horse later. IΓ’β¬β’m just tenderizing it. π
SoΓ’β¬Β¦maybe IΓ’β¬β’m wrongΓ’β¬Β¦and maybe this is a different thread, but I truly see a difference between using a vehicle beyond its rated capacity and using after market, not DOT approved, parts. In my mind the difference is that in one case, one activity has been evaluated and been shown to be unsafe. The vehicle has been designed for a specific job. In the other case, no official testing has been undertaken to secure the necessary approvals. In the second case the parts may or may not have a negative effect on the performance of the vehicle. The user must evaluate things on a case by case basis.
My Tacoma has two tow ratings. Without the tow package, the rating is 2500lbs. With the tow package (which my truck has), the rating is 6500lbs. That's a huge difference because I bought the tow package with the truck? I don't think so. I can buy an aftermarket receiver and trans cooler, which is all I see as the difference between the two set ups. But, the truck would be rated at 2500lbs because it didn't come with the tow package.
Second issue: Who would tow 6500lbs with a tacoma???? π² I think I would be close with a 14ft trailer and my jeep. It may be under the limit, but would you tow that set up with my mini truck??? John's truck may not be rated at 6500lbs, but it would be safer to tow my jeep than my truck, at least I think so...
And, some laws are just stupid, so there. π In Nevada, you donΓ’β¬β’t have to cover your tires, and you can tow a heck of a lot more with a class C license, BUT, you still canΓ’β¬β’t tow beyond your vehicles rated capacity.
Having the proper equipment is a good idea. I know a guy that borrowed a trailer from someone and towed it to Southern California with a Jeep on it. Turns out the tires on the trailer werenΓ’β¬β’t rated for the weight he had on it and after multiple flat tires, he lost two of them pretty violently. He nearly lost the trailer and the Jeep on it. He was darn lucky that he was towing the load with a vehicle big enough to handle it. If he had been towing it with a ΓΒ½ ton truck IΓ’β¬β’m not sure that the day would have end at a tire shop instead of an emergency room.Kathleen and Brad- Guest former userGuest former user

So you are telling me that my Toyota 1/2 ton truck with a 10500lb tow rating can't tow my Jeep and trailer π

Fair enough...the 1/2 ton comment was overly generic (although the "is the new Tundra really a 1/2 ton truck arguement would probably make an interesting thread."π
Tree hugger or not (wtf does that mean anyway) I'd still avoid towing beyond the rated limits of the vehicle and/or the trailer.
