The following is from an email that Kyle sent me. It might be of interest to others. In order to get the chainsaw certification you need to be certified in first aid and CPR. Just an FYI, Kyle and I served in the fire serve together for several years so I know Kyle well.
Hi Jeff. Just the basic first aid/CPR will work. I’m going to work on trying to have a class here at our ranger station, but certified instructors are hard to find and I think by law they can only have 10 students. Also, first aid/CPR isn’t required to take the class, but needed to receive the certification. After I receive a copy of the first aid/CPR, then I send the saw cert card. I attached a few links for on-line CPR, but I’ll check to see if there is an on-line first aid course and let everyone know. I have you down for the February class. Thanks Jeff and I’ll see you soon!

I read the email from kyle and you don't need the certs to do the chainsaw class but he can't give you your chainsaw cert until he gets your other certs so you can do the chainsaw class first. He also said they provide the safety gear for the class for those who don't have their own
I would like to take the first aid class before attending the chainsaw class (to avoid any delays), so I need to make sure I am taking the appropriate class.
Since I should have the safety gear when I am using the saw, I would like to get it before the class and use my own gear in class.

Rich, I don't know what they require but chainsaw chaps, safety glasses and gloves would probably be on the list. They might also require a hardhat. I too would like to know what is actually required.

Required safety gear includes:
1-Hard Hat
2-Eye Protection
3-Ear Protection
4-Long Sleeved Shirt
5-Gloves
6-Pants
7-Chaps meeting Forest Service specifications (6170–4)
8-Laced 8" Boots
1,2, and 3 are covered with one of those all in one helmets. psc=1&refRID=PPXEXTCWCYRNYCBFPYA3
Day one is a classroom day so if we need anything it will be easy enough to find and homedepot or wallmart before the field class. I have 3 sets of safety gear now so anyone taking the Feb or March classes is welcome to use it. Unfortunately they are already spoken for in the Jan class.

The Red Cross online first aid/CPR class does not get you certified but gives you a class completion document. Is that ok for the chain saw class, or do we need to get certified?
Just present it and see what he says at the time. There is no formal rule within the forest service about what counts but the Red Cross does require in-person CPR on a dummy to pass.

Can I borrow one set for March class?
