So after a few days of trying to get some km2s it seems the 38s are discontinued in a 17in wheel and because I aint putting no 20s on the Jeep my tire of choice is not happening.
Any other options in a 38 or 38.5 that are not super swampers or the mtr - the reasonable choice at this point seems to be the pro comps in 40 but I don't think I can do 40s.
Any ideas guys as 37s don't get me where I want.

I can't offer any advise on an alternate tire for you John, but I was warned when I was shopping for my Km2's that they run small and it's true. I have 35" Km2's and they measure about 34". so the 38's probably only measured out to 37" or possibly less. If your already running 37's then you probably wouldn't have been very happy if you had succeeded in getting the Km2's in a 38". I wish I would have went with a larger size but i'm extremely happy with the tire it self. Good luck in your search

A true 37 will be the same size as your BFG "38".
why not pro comps with their 40,000 mile warranty?
Toyos with their durability?
Goodyears with their versatility?
all 4 tires will be the same size, approximately.
there are other tires as well you could consider.

It seems like there are more options possible in the 18 rim. I thought I saw Km2s in 38 flavor there.

Another cheap option would be the Yokohama Geolander MT. They do a 38 and a 40 and they are cheap.
Um...what?

I looked at the yokos but directional on a mud is a no no for me unless you guys have other opinions?
Brad can you really recommend the Goodyear - that was my second choice but after seeing your experience with them I wrote them off - unless you think that was just a specific your jeep issue with them?
I've got 17s so the toys are no go or any other 18 or 20?
I have no issue with the pro comps I just don't think 40s are in the best interest of my reliability as I sit or if they would really even fit . : \
The only thing I have on the table right now are the
Pro comps in 40
Or the mtrs in 38
but just after seeing Brads experience I am really nervous though I know Brad also dose not care for the BFG but I will argue with anyone it is the greatest Off Road/DD mud out there unless you are more times in the snow and ice then not.
Still open to other options or if you think the mtrs are a good option I'll hear that out as well just remember my rig is a DD and I can't be getting 25000 miles out of tires and spending 22-3500 ever year and a half on tires.
As a reference point my km2s are at 72xxx miles and though probably past what I would consider the best option for trail use anymore they could still pull some and I estimate no less than 10000 miles street use left. I think I mounted then 2010/2011 and we all know I've used then

Wow now bfg isn't listing anything bigger than a 37 no matter wheel size - they must be discontinuing the km2 all together. My assumption is they will come out with a km3 or completely different line as with the name and racing recognition I can't see them switching it to a Michelin or deleting their mud division altogether. Guess we shall see

How about the new Falken MTs. They make a 38" for the 17" rim. I just can't find them for sale anywhere. But I see rigs all over with them.
I really liked my MTRs. I had about 25k on them before I was considering replacing them. I think your 72k on the BFG is amazing. I'm not sure another tire could compete with that. The Toyos really do wear well, but I think you have trade offs in other areas. I.e., stiffer compound and less grip on the rocks due to the stiffer compound.
The thing I constantly struggle with is like John mentioned, do you jump up in tire size to gain more just to spend more? I think 38's would be very great and fulfilling on the JK, but am I really gaining that much over a 37" tire? The struggle is real for me. I really want a 40" tire and I'm pretty positive I could make it last with built Rubicon axles. But is that something I want to worry about...
We could always get into the debate of tire weight vs size also. MTRs, ProComps are fairly light compared to Toyos.
Um...what?

I thought for JK's they recommend going to a Dana 60 type axle if you want 40" tire or bigger?
I think you could [maybe] get away with a front D44 if you "Beef the Crap out of It"; Sleeve, gusset, RCV shafts or Chromo with CTMs. Probably going to fly through ball joints though. I wheeled the crap out of my old Jeep with a built D44 front and 38" MT/r tires, but it was a smaller/lighter rig. Of course my theory hasn't been tested out yet, maybe John will test it out for me.
In the rear however, I'd definitely think about a D60. The rear takes a lot of abuse in climbing obstacles and it's usually the small gears and locker that give out first. I know the Rear D44 in my 2015 is pretty beefy with thick walled tubes and 33 spline shafts, but that does nothing for ring gear strength and I probably wouldn't run much over a full-sized 37" tire back there if I wheeled hard.
My future [in two years] plan is to test out my theory with my built D44 front and a replacement rear D60 with 40" tires. First we will see how the front behaves when I flog it on 37" tires.
I used to wheel a lot. . .

We run Goodyear MTRs (with Kevlar) 37's but they measure 36.8" on the ground, 17" rims. We haven't had them very long so we can't say about the wear. Guy thinks they perform very well off road.
We are running a Dinatrac 44 in the front and will eventually get a 60 in the rear but intend to continue running these tires.
That's our 2 cents..

The BFG sizes disappearing is a pretty big hint that things are changing in the tire world. Falken has their "new" MT (despite being out for a couple years and not being available anywhere), Cooper has the new (1yr old) STT PRO, and General just announced their brand new X3. I bet we get at least one new tire revealed at SEMA.
A couple of my non-club (gasp) jeep friends have very similar JKUs (rubicon autos 35s with spacer lift and minimal bolt-ons). They both had BFG KM2s with one having 1 yr old tires and the other being 4 yr old tires. The tires were worn to about the same level but the new tires preformed noticeably better on the concrete at prairie city. A few weeks later the guy with the older tires sold them and got the new Cooper STT PROs. A second trip to Prairie City showed them performing even better than the KM2s on the concrete (35s up the staircase with almost no tire squeal and no lockers). The grip was on par with my super soft/wears out in 20k super swampers and the only mileage reports I have seen are some (very few) diesel guys seeing ~20-40k out of them.
Point is, newer tread compounds are vastly softer/grippier and last longer than the tires of even 5 years ago. And a new tire seems to be coming out every 3 to 6 months. Look at all your options before making a choice because it is getting crowded in the MT tire market and the number of options has never been better. I am still a fan of the soft but short lived swampers since my rig isnt a DD but the STTs made an impression and come in a wider 37x13.5R17 so my next tire is up in the air.
For you the warranty/treadlife seems to be the most important. Hard to beat an actual warranty if that is what you are after.

Treadlife is not the biggest concern but to pay 15% less for a tire with less, very similar, or minutely better performance but only get 33-50% the life doesn't seem to make much sense - I have no issue paying money for tires but I also don't want to throw it away.
I'll look into this cooper and see what is about.
I Guess I'll hold out as long as I can and see what's available at the time and see if I can get a few more real world experiences from people
Thanks for the info guys and any more keep it coming.

Dynatrac tried to tell us at SEMA that the industry standard for rim size will be the 18". They justified their statement by saying the increase of the average tire size on vehicles is increasing the demand for larger brakes and stopping power. They said that fitting larger enough brakes to stop 37's is getting harder to do. I'm not sure how that will effect the tire world, because I still feel like certain brands are still getting use to the 17" rim.
But, along these same lines of thinking, I would like to see the tire industry start to fill the tire gap sizing. There's not many options between 37-40" tires. I think a wise tire company would start coming out with 38" and 39" tires. Whether that tire be 17-18" rim, I would like to see the gap filled.
I know Toyo had a 39x13.5x17 tire they were testing, and that would be my next tire if it ever hit the market.
Maxxis had a pretty cool tire at the SEMA showroom floor but that is all I've seen of it. I wonder if the hype wasn't all they thought it would be: http://www.fourwheeler.com/pro.....nd-trucks/

Here is the response I got in an email from BFG.
"Thanks for your interest in the Mud-Terrain T/A KM2's for your Jeep. The largest size available is the 37. All of the larger sizes have been discontinued. While we do see they are discontinuing quite a few of the sizes in the KM2's, we haven't been given any information on the replacement tire; if there will be a KM3 or something else. I know some of the smaller sizes have the KO2's as a recommended replacement. But, these are quite as aggressive as the KM2's. "

Seems like BFG is going to lose quite a bit of business. What manager in their right mind would discontinue a tire before a replacement was ready? Great way to get people to jump ship and lose that brand loyalty.
