Do we have any backpackers in the club? Jeff and I have been backpacking since before we got into four wheeling. We've been talking about picking up the hobby again and want to do some different portions of the PCT.
The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) is in our backyard. It's a hiking trail from the Mexico border that goes all the way to the Canada border. I'm familiar with a small portion of it between hwy 88 and hwy 50. I am planning on doing the trek from hwy 50 to interstate 80 this summer. It will be a long hike. Just around 55 miles. I'd like to do some training/shorter hikes before the grand finale.
Has anyone done any portions of the PCT? Any suggestions or interest in some backpacking?
Um...what?

I think that's a great goal!
What timeframe you thinking about anyways? I ask (i don't know the elevation profile) bc season can help/hurt for water consumption and bug congestion.
I look forward to your thoughts. Any chance a linkable map of the portion you hitting?

I can't find the map of the 50 to 80 section at the moment. I'm going off a trail book I picked up from REI.
One of my pre trips to help prep and see what will work for the longer trip will be 88 to 50. It's about 13.5 miles. I plan to that in 2 days and 1 night. In the link below, on the right side is a map with elevation and landmarks.

I think you're mileage is reasonable. It'll be long days and you'll probably get to camp, set up your tent, sit down to eat, fall asleep, wake up at 2:00 in the morning cold and get in your sleeping bag...then repeat. 😀 I'm jealous. If you're looking for company let me know when you plan to go. My summer schedules are tough but I'd love to tag along.

Bender- PM me your email.
If anyone else is interested in any of the trips I'm doing pm me your email as well. I'll be sending out an email with all the details of my 3 planned trips to individuals that are interested in joining me on any part of my journey.
My plans are pretty much wake up eat and pack up then hike with a lunch break. Then crash once I hit my intended camps for each night. I also intend to freshen up at lakes when given the opportunity.

I'm not sure when we will be going on the 50 to 80 hike but I know later in the summer will be dryer and less bugs. So I need to find a balance of no bugs and more water. 🙂
My hope is end of July. The other shorter trips will be late May thru June.
Here is a link to a map of the first 6ish miles of 50 to 80. It's to lake Aloha and back. It's a good hike. Pass 5 lakes in 6 miles.

Just an update, I leave next week. Can't wait!!
If you want to see a map of where we are going, check this link and scroll down to section K. That is 80 to 50.

We have done parts of the PCT too. Just finished part near Mt. Shasta. We have not done all of it but the 50-80 section looks great. Tools I found helpful include the printed maps from the link you gave with the halfmile app on the iPhone.
Also I love Motion-X on the iPhone as well. You can download the maps ahead of time. I have found this helps a lot when trails are not maintained or I just blunder. I also use this to record my tracks to geo-tag photos.
Maybe I can shake some time to backpack with you in the future.
