Ouch.
After a good bit of research into the matter, which is a case-by-case situation, flogging of a local machinist, and interrogation of some guy named Joe around here, the engine is staying put. Last night new camshaft went in, distributor set, and timing set. Exception is getting the darn cam key dowel fully seated. 👿

Did it full cam swap. Kept the cam bearings.
Grind #2030
Good torque cam!!

So the install has been completed: 90% Remaining 10% is assorted stuff.
What did I do?
1. camshaft change
2. double roller timing chain
3. water pump
4. new intake manifold
5. tune up
This is the first time ever I've done engine work. It was darn fun, especially vs. the doubters. 😀 Big learning experience and no regrets. So here is a video of yesterday's big moment. Cameo by the new VP.

Everything bolted on minus serp/fan/shroud
Oil tree tee for mech. oil pressure gauge
M1 Intake Manifold
Could not use my K&N kit due to the body lift. Jeff had a spare 14x3 to toss on there.
Only 1 glitch right now. Code for injector #5 open circuit. So, no fuel, but there is spark as tested with a timing light. Picked up a new injector today at lunch...and crossing fingers this evening. Seriously...only 1 glitch like this. Well, might be couple others...but I'll leave that for another day. 😀
Then get some metal fabbed up for a winch bumper!! I don't want to put the stock bumper back on. 👿

Here is the cam card details. I was partial to torque, but not greatly. Most importantly to keep cost down, picked a decent cam with little more lift, but not so much to go out of spec for remainder of stock valvetrain. Down the road...considering roller rockers to get even more lift.

Gibson headers. Had good luck with them in the past. They did the design and R&D. Mopar put their part # and a carb # on them. Welding Required. Dyno sheet went with the truck but if i remember correct it picked up 25-40 ft.lbs from off idle to about 4800 rpm. Blue and Red ? With Jeff around I thought it would be Black and Yellow Black and Yellow Black and Yellow Black and Yellow Black and Yellow Black and Yellow
