I was wandering around yesterday daydreaming about my (distant) future garage/shop. I’ve got lots of room so I was thinking big. Of course, budget will be an issue so I was thinking reality. I have more depth than width based on minimizing the grading but I was thinking I could pretty easily fit a 24’ wide x 36’ deep garage/shop. I could easily squeeze in four cars (or three and a shop). Then I got to thinking what would I want to make sure and include.
How big is your space? What do you want that it doesn’t have? What’s on your wish list? What’s on your “if you’re starting from scratch, you’ve got to haveâ€

a friend built his as three bays.
Only the center had a door, and it was a 16 foot wide.
The right side was open just as a car port, on the leeward side of most storms.
Over the center had a second story that doubled as a craft area, game area and overflow guest loft.
The left side was his workbench shop area.
I'd put the compressor 20 yards away in a separate shed.
Flow through breeze is nice for summer.
Lots of light in the shop area
Lots of power.
Build the center strong enough for a hoist.
Closed Mondays.

Some of the things I like about my new garage...
I like having the 8' garage door and the really high cielings. I can drive my Jeep in with tons of clearance and jack it up without hitting the opener. I have a ton of lighting. I don't really even need drop lights when working under the rig. I like the little bonus area with a big sink. It beats having everybody wash their greasy hands in the kitchen. I also have two windows that help with ventilation.
I used to wheel a lot. . .

I often daydream about my someday shop. Right now I do all my work in my driveway. It is fenced so I am not exposed to the street but it makes it tough in the winter. This is on the wish list.
30’ x 50’
Tall ceilings
Extra tall ceiling in one stall
Upstairs office/den
½ Bath downstairs
Bath/shower upstairs
Shop urinal (wall mounted out in the open)
Good lighting!
Good heating (no ac)
Big air compressor outside of shop (I do not want to hear it)

My plan in the next few years is to build a shop at the bottom of my property. I will build it large enough for a lift, AC is a must, wood stove, the bathroom will have to be my trees like Keane said, plenty of 220 and 110 outlets, 50+ gallon air tank..I recently bought a Millermatic 220 Mig Welder, 2 drill presses, and a few other shop tools.

Maybe he likes to watch? Work party at rainfly's. 😯 😯
Where did you come up with the 30'x50' number? I hear you on the driveway working part. It sucks. I'd love to even have a concrete pad. I'm tired of working in the rocks.
I'll probably keep mine as a shop and not try and add in any sort of den. I've also been daydreaming about adding a bedroom onto my house with a pool room below. I need to win the lottery. 😀
