Tyler, via the Nor-Cal 4X4 Facebook page, is signing up volunteers to work Winch Hill 5 at this year's Sierra Trek August 8-11. Today I signed up to volunteer and was wondering if any other club members might be interested in volunteering as well. The cost is $90 and includes all of your meals and one run. It is much less expensive than the standard registration fee. You are required to work one shift of approximately five hours and then you have the rest of the time to spend as you choose. I have volunteered to work two shifts if they need me (Thursday and or Friday afternoon on Winch Hill 5).
The event is held at Meadow Lake which is accessible by 2WD vehicles. Winch Hill 5 is at the very end of the trail and is close to the main camp, food, bar and entertainment at Meadow Lake. You can get to Winch Hill 5 in 2WD in any stock vehicle with good clearance. Whether you volunteer or register as a regular attendee this is a fun event. I did it many years ago when the camp was at Cisco Grove. In my opinion, it is much nicer to camp at Meadow Lake. It would be great to get some other club members to join me. Just hanging out with a lot of other 4X4 enthusiasts makes it worthwhile. Here are links to the NorCal 4X4 Facebook and the Sierra Trek pages (registration ends in five days):

Thanks for making the push on this side Jeff 🙂
Essentially, we have quite a few people signing up to volunteer at WH5... which is awesome, because it definitely is the best one to work at due to its proximity to camp. So, I have split up the 3 days into work shifts. "morning" is 8am-2pm and "afternoon" is 2pm to 8pm. Shift options are:
Thurs Morning
Thurs Afternoon
Fri Morning
Fri Afternoon
Sat Morning
Sat AFternoon
Jeff and I had the idea, that if we can get 4-5 Posse members that want to work a specfic shift, that we could turn that shift into a "Gold Hills Posse" shift and do a little club advertisement as well. If you just wanted to come up for the day and not partake in any meals or camp activities, then you can do so without paying the volunteer registration. You will just have to sign a liability waiver for insurance purposes.
Otherwise, $90, 3 days of food (lunches not included), camp site, showers, bar, camp fires, raffle, hangin out with other wheelers, electricity. And, as long as you commit to actually working at least 1 shift, then you can jump in on another run and have some fun on fordyce or bear valley ohv or signal peak.
Let me know if you have any questions!

I know that Tyler really needs to get some people to volunteer to work winch hill five at Sierra Trek. The deadline to sign up is this Friday (see links in first post). It would be nice to see our Posse Family step up and help out at Sierra Trek and to support Tyler's effort to provide crews for winch hill five. Come join the with us!!!!

Hey Tyler,
I want to join up with you guys for Friday and Saturday. Volunteering on Friday WH5 afternoon and participating on the Saturday River Run. I'm trying to register but I don't see where to volunteer or to sign up for $90. All I see is $85 for Camp and Entertainment only, Camp, Entertainment and Food $135 or Full Run Registration for $185 Is there a special URL to do this.
Thanks,
John
These are the options I had to choose from.

Here is the Winch Hill 5 volunteer signup link. After you log in you will see a Trek Committee Registration option ($90 for Cal4Wheel members, $100 for non-members). There is a winch hill five committee option. In club name let them know that you are with Nor-Cal4X4 and Gold Hills Posse.

Ok with the URL that Jeff gave me I was able to register and do the River Run on Saturday. It only gave me the option to select Winch Hill 5 to volunteer but not dates or times. I was hoping to volunteer WH5 Friday afternoon. Funny how under the Volunteer tab on the website I did not have the option that Jeff had. The site probably is trying to tell me something haha.
Anyways I will be there Friday by 11am. See you guys then.

Schedule is posted on the Facebook group page
https://www.facebook.com/group.....=bookmarks
If you are not listed on it (John), still come on down. I just don't have time to keep updating it manually lol
If you want to come and hang out for one of the days, you are more than welcome to!! The bar is buying all of the volunteers a drink 😉

No worries. They took my money and sent me the packet just didn't schedule me a time. I guess I'm one of the few people in the world who doesn't have facebook so can't read schedule. I'll be there early Friday and they can send me anywhere or have me do whatever. Just there to volunteer in some capacity.

If you get there early enough track us down at camp. I can get cell service on the dam so I will shoot you a text on Thursday to let you know where we are camped. If it is later then just come to winch hill 5, which is the last technical spot on the trail. You will not have a problem getting to the top of winch hill 5 from Meadow Lake. When you get to the Meadow Lake campground be sure to continue straight towards the Fordyce trail (i.e. don't continue on Meadow Lake Road at the split, it heads to Jackson Meadows Reservoir). The road leading to winch hill 5 has a few intersections. Try to stay on the main road/trail. Here is a map showing that area. The trail is at the bottom of the screen and goes southwest of the dam.

I found a YouTube video that includes footage of one of the roll overs on winch hill five at Sierra Trek this year. The winch hill five roll over section begins at 5:55 on the video. Tyler (white shirt and boonie hat) is spotting and was slightly below the Jeep when it started to roll (watch how fast Tyler moves!). Coincidentally I knew two of the guys who were in another rig in this group so I got to catch up with them. Our son's went to school and played baseball together. My Jeep (red TJ) is parked perpendicular to the hill so I was the one who winched him back over while the vehicle above provided winch support to keep it from rolling down hill. This video is an example of how quickly a vehicle can roll almost unexpectedly. Fortunately I had brought a spill kit with me so we were able to clean up and remove the contaminated soil from the oil spill. Enjoy the action.

I think it was more around the 7.55 mark on the video

And just so we're clear... That was a "flop" not a "roll".I've flopped my Jeep a few times but I haven't rolled yet.
True. And he had little damage. A dent in the A pillar, cracked window and a few scuffs on the tube fenders. Funny story. After the flop the driver said to the passenger "Well, at least I didn't break my windshield". A few seconds later it cracked.

Tyler and I would like to see our club agree to work winch hill 5 at Sierra Trek next year. You can get to the top of winch hill 5 in a high clearance vehicle in 2WD. It is a lot of fun. You are only 20 minutes from camp where the other fun and action occurs at the camp at Meadow Lake. For $90 as a volunteer you get dinner and breakfast for three days and you can run one of the organized trail runs. Why would anyone not want to go?
