As usual, we had a great turnout, great food, and a fun snow run. We have a fantastic group of people to hang out with! I got home around 6:00. Let's do this again next month!
Totally agree wit you Rich.
Gil did a great job as our Trail Master and everything went extremely well! I'm sure all had a great time trail riding, pulling comrades out of deep snow, or being pulled out of deep snow...
For me, the "Golden Moment" was when I was just catching up to the group the CB radio came alive with:
"it looks like a Jeep graveyard down there!!!" I laughed so hard I nearly drove off the road (except the ruts in the snow wouldn't let me)!
My son-in-law took several pictures and videos. Who can I send them to?

great day! except for Guy and Lynda . sorry guys, hope your back on the trail soon!! it was nice to see so many new faces. the old faces are getting, well you know. the chili, brats and chicken were off the hook. as well as the infamous peanut butter Shark bites. the hot dogs were still on the hook but still appreciated. Maybe some mustard would have done the trick Gil . anywhooo, did anyone happen to grab a clear plastic Tupperware? it had small cookies in it originally.

What happened to Guy and Lynda?
Good question John...after having new ring & pinion installed in the rear (had 34 miles on it), we headed out of Cameron Park with Brad & Kathleen following close behind. About 1.5 to 2 miles into the trip, we felt a quickly increasing vibration, then a huge "bang", & we came to rest in the shoulder of Hwy 50. Brad stopped behind us & we looked at the horror story underneath. The pinion shaft broke & dropped the rear yoke on the ground & the companion yoke on the driveshaft not only broke, but was freely flopping around (we disconnected it), fortunately not hitting anything critical. The cause of the event was that the differential had no oil! How I made it from the shop to our home, I'll never know.
So the apparent damage is: unusable rear axle housing, the guts are history, including the Eaton locker, axles & everything else, the driveshaft, & rear yoke. The rear wiring is gone, unknown about the transfer case or the transmission.
The rear wheels would not turn when offloading from the tow truck at the shop, but we managed to get it on the ground. Until the full damage assessment is performed, it's anyone's guess the full extent of it all, but it won't be pretty.
For everyone's curiosity, I'll keep posting the known damage, the prognosis, the cost & what the ultimate fixes & resolutions are, until we become operational again.
I recommend all of you check the oil levels in your differentials, the consequences are major! If you have the work done at a shop, ask the question.
Glad to hear everyone enjoyed the snow run yesterday. Hopefully we'll be able to make the remaining events.

Black chair would be Drew’s. Next meeting will be fine else I can pick it up sooner if there is a convenient time/place.

Wow! That's unfortunate. Hope the shop takes care of you.
I used to wheel a lot. . .

The group that went up camping consisted of the wife and I, Brian and Drew from the club, Brian's neighbor (bret?), and my firends Cody and Holly. Brian, Drew, and Bret(?) all slept in their Jeeps under a pile of blankets. Cody and Holly were in their Tepui roof top tent with a -20 two person sleeping bag. Jessica and I were in our CVT tent with our standard summer sleeping gear but with the annex put up on the tent and a Mr Buddy heater on low set up in the annex.(the Mr buddy is a catalytic heater so the propane is completely burned meaning it does not produce carbon monoxide and is safe and rated for indoor use) We were warm enough to leave the front window open on our tent and wake up to a gorgeous sunrise. Temps got down into the low 20s but there wasn't any wind so we all slept soundly.
Here was the view from our tent in the morning:

Wow, that sucks. Hopefully you get everything fixed properly, soon and at no additional cost to you. We really missed all of you out there but I'm glad you had support off-trail from the Posse family!

I failed to take any pictures yesterday. Bad on me. However, you or someone else can start a 1/13/19 snow run patrol picture or video folder in the gallery.
I don't think I have privileges to add a folder or images.

OK, here's the latest news on the silver broken arrow. It turns out there was the correct amount of oil in the differential, so now the mystery gets deeper. After removing the dif cover yesterday, in fact the pinion shaft did snap & has lodged itself against the ring gear, which has stopped all rotation. The axles have been pulled with no apparent damage to the shafts or splines (they are chrome molly). The ring gear & Eaton locker are toast. But, with all this said, it hasn't been determined what caused this to happen. Did the bearing fail & cause the pinion to misalign, was it a failure due to a metallurgy issue, did something else bind & cause all this to happen? All of this, boys & girls, hopefully will be answered in the next episode of "what cause this happen" in your next forum report, soon to come at your nearest computer or phone.
To answer all those wondering, MC Motorsports is the shop where a new ring & pinion was installed & this investigation is happening. Marc is as baffled as we all are & is diving into this. Again, hopefully the cause will be determined today. Standby for more...

The update & popular conclusion, after Marc getting a gear expert to look at the carnage, is that the pinion gear bearing failed, causing excessive heat & breaking the shaft, which froze the rotation & caused the collateral damage. So, for now, the housing, locker, R&P, some wiring & driveline are history. The axles, transfer case & transmission seem to be OK, but will be checked to be sure. Working on alternates/upgrades...we'll see how all that works out. Standby for more...
