OfflineI am going back to Hope Valley to see the Fall colors on October 18 and to explore Scotts Lake and the Alpine Mine which we did not make it to on July 5th. This trail is listed in Roger Mitchell's book "High Sierra East Side" This trail is less than 10 miles in length, in and out, rated 2-3/6 on the Mitchell Scale which he describes requirements of high clearance, 4WD. In comparison, he lists Slickrock as 5/6. Scotts Lake is listed in All Trails as moderate. I have not been on this trail but it can be seen on OnX maps and All Trials. The trailhead is off Hwy 88 on the opposite side close to Red Lake.
Depending on the group we may just want to have lunch and hang out at Scott's Lake. Other options include going back to Crater Lake if time allows. OnX maps also shows the Burnside trail at the junction of Hwys 88 and 89, also in Hope Valley. This trial leads to Burnside Lake, Pickett Peak Road and Hawkins Peak Road. OnX rates them as 1- 4/10 scale.
If there is any interest, please post. We would meet at the Shell gas station off Hwy 50, Sly Park Exit, 6529 Pony Express Trail at 8:00 and head out at 8:30. We would pick up MET to 88 to Hope Valley. Would expect to be done by 2:00 or 3:00 or later depending on how many of these trails folks want to do.
Post if interested.
Up dating this run. Folks who have signed up:

OfflineLooking for feedback from folks going on this run as this first winter storm will have a significant impact on this run.
The storm is expected to drop between 4 - 8 inches of snow on Hope Valley which will unlikely melt by Saturday with the temps dropping below freezing Thursday and Friday night. I would expect the trail to Scott's Lake to be wet, snowy and icy instead of an easy to moderate run to the lake, same for the Burnside Lake Trail. I am not interested or would enjoy getting stuck in the snow and spending the day recovering from a snowy, icy trail as my experience in recovery is very limited.
I see the following options:
- Cancel the run.
- Head up to Hope Valley, see the colors and check out the trails to determine the interest of the group. If the trails are snowed in, it would make for a short day.
It is possible that MET will be closed which would require driving up 50, over Echo Summit to 89 and then 88 to Hope Valley.
For those going on this run, please provide input.

OfflineJeff, I can't make this run but I was in Hope Valley last week. I don't see the snow being a problem. I think the fall colors will peak this weekend and it should be beautiful up there. The weekend forecast looks good. I would go for it as long as you have to or more rigs. You can always turn around if you encounter conditions that you're not comfortable with because there is no inclement weather forecast for the weekend. Just my two cents worth.

OfflineHad a great day in Hope Valley. MET was clear. Met up with Richard and Deborah, thanks for making the run. Made it to Scott's Lake and Burnside Lake. Plenty of sunshine, no wind, colors were glorious, about 6 - 8 inches of snow on the trails, no ice, easily passable. Had lunch at Burnside Lake. No incidents. Made it home by 4:30.

OfflineWe were up there too this weekend on barney riley trail. We went to the primitive hot springs where barney Riley trail and Carson river east fork hot springs trail meet.
Maybe we can schedule a run up to the hot springs in the future some time. The Carson river trail was like a 3/10, it was really easy. The only part that was maybe difficult was a river crossing with about 20 inches of water. High clearance vehicles would have no issue at all.

Just a heads up, it hasn't been legal to cross the river for well over a decade. Plenty of people still do and the local forest office has nearly zero trail patrol budget.
