for anyone interested I am going to go snow camping the night before the snow patrol on MET. I started a dedicated thread to plan but I will try and post up here with snow conditions/levels friday. Those of us camping will meet you guys out on MET once we have packed up camp.
As such, I can't lead the snow patrol group from Pollock Pines but it looks like we have some experienced people coming along that can handle it. The camping group will be in 151.760.

We're in
We now may be in. Chain control got set up in Placerville this morning (2/23) & the weather tomorrow looks more intense than this morning. The traffic, as always, is a mess leading up to the chain control, so I'll check Saturday morning & see what it's like & decide then if we are going or not. If we go, may be late to show-up either at Shell or on the trail.

We may have road closure issues. My buddy that lives 1 exit before Sly Park Road was stuck in Placerville last night til 8:00 due to icy road conditions. Plus chains were required for every vehicle, even 4wd vehicles. No chains and you were turned away.
Conditions may change, just wanted to give a heads up from local knowledge.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

In live off sly park rd. 1 mile from Safeway. They did shut it down yesterday because of multiple spin out. Its open now but not to say it will stay open. They could close it again any time for spin outs or avalanche control. The snow will lighten up tonight with light snow during the day tomorrow. It’s beautiful up here. Tomorrow will be fun!

I can't make it tomorrow. While technically chains are required for R2, I have never seen it enforced. The reason it isn't enforced is because they would have to inspect every vehicle for chains, which would bring traffic to a total stand still as people rummaged through their packed vehicle trying to find their chains. I have gotten off at the I-80 Applegate exit for over 40 years. This is the exit where they often close I-80 and where they screen all commercial trucks for chains before allowing them to proceed during chain controls. I have never seen them screen all 4WD vehicles for chains. On I-80 they close the freeway rather than impose R3 requirements. Maybe Hwy 50 is different, but how would they enforce it unless they had R3 requirements where they could look for installed chains on every vehicle?
- Requirement 2 (R2): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels.
NOTE: (Four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas.) - Requirement 3 (R3): Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

Currently Hwy 50 chain control is east of Pollock Pines...we are good to go! See y'all there. I hope it's ok that my friend tags along. He has a MBZ G-Wagen on portal axles.
absolutely. We are here and we took the side roads to avoid all of the chain control people. It got us here faster but traffic is still moving pretty well on the highway.
