What kind of metal are you looking for? I buy most of my steel from Harris welding on Riverside or Auburn Iron works in Auburn. If I am looking for DOM tubing, I get it from Tube Team in Sac or WFO in Auburn.

Oh, and I was going to tell you. I removed my Atlas support ring. I did a bunch of research and found out that having the support ring on there with a flexible frame is a really bad idea. Those support rings are meant for rigid frame buggies. A Jeep is designed to have a 3 point mounting system. 2 motor mounts and a transmission mount. This allows the transmission and transfer case to flex with the frame when the motor torques from excelleration or when the frame pedals flex from the suspension movement. If you add the 4th mount to the transfer case, you are not allowing the tcase to be able to move. Guess what happens when the transfer case doesnt move when your frame pedals flex. Cracked case 😥 I guess I will just try and be a little less hard on my Jeep NOT!!!!! I guess I will just have to replace an occasional transfer case adapter.

Yeah, since the YJ fender wells are flat I was thinking of putting a plate across on top and at the angle to create a trunk and using nutserts to make it easier/quicker to insert and remove the bolts when needed. I also want it to be strong enough to hold stuff on top as well. I'm using a storage box in the back now but it's a bit of a pain to dig into.

How are your brakes working? Did you go home Saturday and wash the top and take it off?
Breaks are working great! Thanks for your help. I parked in the driveway when I got home and it still rolled back a little with the parking break on. I adjusted the cable more and now it doesn't roll. 🙂
After that I did wash the top and remove it. My mesh top came on Monday and I put that on too. I like it!

Kevin, I don't know any sources up that way. Add Blue Collar supply to the list on Florin Perkins Rd. Lowes actually carries some small stuff. I do have a some nutserts if you need any.

Blue collar will sell smaller sizes becuase that is where I buy from. I've heard S&K is cheaper, but blue collar cuts down whatever I need for free once I buy it and I can keep the scrap since I've already paid for it. I often dig through their scrap heap, snag 6-10 pieces of similar thickness metal and offer them a couple bucks to use it for welding practice.

Are you talking about using plate steel as a top covering the trunk area of your Jeep? That is going to weigh a ton 😯

I was thinking aluminum but need to get a price first. I know it's more expensive but still probably a lot less than the $600 for the Tuffy box. 😯

Aluminum is a good idea. Let me know what you find on a price. I might do the same thing. I think aluminum might even weigh less than using wood? I think you might still need a center support to avoid bending, but I think 1 or 2 small legs in the center might be enough.
