OfflineA Friend of mine that took a 4X4 trip for the first time to Death Valley with some friends. He like it so much he is considering getting a 4X4 of his own. He has been looking at 1995 thru 2002 Cherokee or 4 Runners. He's not planing on rock hopping just mild trails, sand and fun outdoor exploring. With room enough for two to three days stuff.
Getting past brand loyalty........ what are you folks thoughts on each one?

OfflineBoth will be excellent for what he's looking to do.
Jeeps will be cheaper than the 4 runners.
I don't know his budget, but the 4.0 is an excellent motor. The 3.4l Toyota is also an excellent motor. The earlier models in your timeframe is the 3.0l motor. Not as good as the 3.4 found in 96 and up 4 runners.
I found a 96 XJ with like 46k miles in showroom shape. They were asking about 8k for it however.
I know the 4.0l jeep motor has an average rated life of 225,000 miles. To my knowledge it is the longest life rated motor of any Chrysler product! I saw a 3.4l Toyota 4 runner getting smogged with 446,000 miles. It passed...
With these reliability numbers it may be safe to save some bucks and buy a high mileage rig from either brand.
I've owned 3 of the 4.0l jeeps and 4 of the 3.4l 4runners. All good.

OfflineThanks guys, I passed on the info to my friend Gary. He relayed his thanks:
"Thanks for the input from the club forum members…..
Gary Harris"
He asked about the club, never know, maybe a future club prospect. Yes I did invite him to join the forum.
You'll all like this,
I told him to stay away from those Suzukis. They're just to small..... (actually it's, if one with fuel injection is found that is affordable, I want it)
Any additional thoughts I'll pass on.
Thanks again
