Hey guys, Dave here. I'm suspect that my rear diff. has a small leak and needs some attention before we hit the Rubicon. In fact I'd like to get my diff fluid swaped out (and the leak stopped) before we go. Any recomendations on a honest, resonable mechanic. Also was thinking about upgrading diff covers or adding skids. Any thoughts? Much thanks beer

Is it the diff cover that's leaking? If so that's pretty easy to reseal/replace yourself. If you don't know how to do it and don't mind getting your hands dirty I could coach you through it. I don't really have any recommendations on where to take it for this type of work.

Definitely a job that's worth giving it a shot yourself if you've got time. Get together a list of things you want to take care of, buy some pizza, and call it a work party. 😀

If not... All Auto Repair in Cameron Park used to be owned by a friends dad. He sold the business, but still has a stake in it so he keeps an eye on things. I'm drawing a blank on the new guy's name, but he knows his stuff. They'll take care of you.

Is it the pinion seal on the front? If so extreme gear is an option, but it depends on where you live. If it's the cover, it's a quick do it yourself job, or even Jiffy lube should be able to do it!

Hey Fam, (which I think is Fred, I dont know everybodies handle yet) I think I'll take you up on that offer. I'm curious if I should get stronger diff covers or maybe skids. Or do you think the stock covers are ok. Anyways thanks again and I'll see everyone 2morrow nite. 😀

You're right, I'm Fred. I'll leave it up to others to advise you on diff covers. I've been using stock diff covers on my Jeep since it was new in 2000 and haven't had any problem with them. But in all honesty, I don't wheel my Jeep as often or as hard as some of the other guys. I have found that I've worn down the bottom of the rear pumpkin and differential cover quite a bit and run one of Rock-It's differential glider skid plates now. http://www.quadratec.com/produ.....23_205.htm It takes away some clearance but I'm not grinding off the diff cover bolt heads like I was before.

Do you know what type of axles you have in your Jeep and whether or not you have limited slip differentials (some ls diffs require special gear oil or additives)? Do you plan to replace the fluid in front and rear axles? Do you know what weight gear oil you want to use and how much and what RTV to get to seal the covers? If not, I can make up a shopping list or we could run to the store before getting started.

Would a weekday evening work for you to work on this? Tuesday would be a good evening for me. We could do it this weekend, I'm on-call for work so I could get called away, but that doesn't happen very often. We can talk more about it more tomorrow night.

I ran those rock it diff skids on both the front and rear for a while and they worked fine. That's cheap insurance against most damage.
