One unfortunate causality of yesterday’s run was my alternator. About the time we got to Washington both my brake and alternator warning lights came on. Apparently the two are linked. I used a multimeter and my alternator is putting out next to nothing. Fortunately I made it home and was able to drive away from the shirtless guys, BBQing by the side of the road in the middle of town that asked if they could “borrowâ€

what is the stock alternator rated at?

One option is to get yours rebuilt. I had my boat alternator rebuilt here:

Boyle Future Technology
12325 Locksley Ln
Auburn, CA 95602
530-888-6290

IIRC, Greg Boyle iwas/is? the owner. I could be mistaken as it was over 10 years ago.

Right now I'm at 60 amps. It's worked reasonably well except for one time which involved a fair amount of winching. I can actually buy a kit through Toyota to rebuild it. The price is right, but I'd like to see a few more amps.

Thanks for the lead though. If I can't find something for a decent price, I'll give him a call and see what he can do. Maybe he can squeeze more out of it.

I'd call him anyway. My take was he's alot more than just a rebuild shop.

What year is your 4Runner?

Here's a place listing some high output alternators for what seems like a pretty reasonable price.

Mine is an 87, but I was going to give those folks a call anyway.

I was doing some more reading last night and it mentioned that I can only go so big before I have to get serious about upgrading my wiring and fuses. Unfortunately, no one is really sure how big that is. Maybe I should just stick with the little one. I've only had trouble with it once and I just had to make sure and let it run for a while to recharge the battery.

Yup. The more bolt in the bettter though. I'm leaning toward the Mobi-Arc setup and rebuilding the thing myself.

In that pdf he shows a new wiring diagram. It doesn't look too difficult to upgrade.

I read about a guy on Yotatech a bunch of people used. They sent in their stock alternator and he rebuilt it. At the same time you could get him to upgrade it to like 120 to 130 amps. The plus is its your same alternator, so it will fit right back in place. I want to say it was like $180 vs the $400 for something similar that you would have to modify for mounting. If you are interested I will dig up the company so you can get more info.

There is also SVA power products http://www.svapowerproducts.com/

Ray is super nice and very knowledgeable about this stuff. I got my Denso starter for the EB through him. He is a big supporter on Classicbroncos and have seen him on POR at times. Give him a call and he could give you some good advice especially on what wiring might need to be upgraded to go with a higher amp alt.

I'm taking the alternator down to Boyle today. He's got a rebuilt that'll give me at least 90 amps. He gave me the rundown on how to do a bit of wiring to make things work. Thanks for the lead.

Of course, it looks like my alternator problem was caused by the fact that my power steering pump has been puking fluid all over it so I need to take care of that too. Nothing like the snowball effect! 🙁

While you are at Boyle, ask them about streamline motorcycle racing. I think they are on the team that holds a record at Bonneville salt flats.
