morning all:

It's about time for tires, so looking for input. I like Goodrich All Terrains, they do OK on the highway (and are EXCELLENT mall crawling tires) and seem to be fine for the mild wheeling I have done so far. And last a long time.

Anyone have any comment/input on this subject? I think you generally get what you pay for and generally don't want to mess with bargain brand tires - been there, done that.

Les Schwab (Orangevale) quoted me damn near $2k out the door for 5 of them. . . jesus! I hope I can do better than that! Any tire shop recommendations?

if you shop around on the internet you can probably find a site that sells them cheaper.  then take that web page to americas tire.  they will price match it.  I did that with my mud terrains and paid under $1100 for five tires

Buck,

I have used American Tires in the past. Not sure if there is any price advantage.  However, at the last meeting I met Rob.  He works at the Les Schwab in Rocklin. (see below)  You might call him and see what he can do?

I am running BFG KM2's on my rig.  Based on my slim knowledge on tires it would seem that the KM2 might be more suited for off road and the KO2 is better on the street.

From another post regarding front end alignment:

Yes, You have met him at our meetings Brad. I believe he has a profile on here. But I'd call Les Schawb ask for Rob Gutzman (gooseman) and set the appointment up with him. Refresh him that you are Brad from the Posse. I'm pretty positive Hydro is no issue for him. I think I paid around $60-75.

I run BFG's all terrain on my Super Duty and they perform great and last. I have run BFG's all terrain on my Jeep in the past and they performed well.  I to have used America Tire, Folsom branch. They do good work in my opinion.

I just bought new tires for my pickup. They are the New Toyo Open Country R/T. They are a hybrid tire between their AT and M/T tires. They come with a 45,000 mile warranty, hook up great in the snow/ice, they handle great, and are pretty quiet. They are very much like the Goodyear Durtrac tires but with a better mileage warranty.

But if you plan on doing much wheeling then I'd stick with one of the proven M/T designs.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

Hard to go wrong with the newest tires from major companies out right now.  The new mud terrains are as quiet as all terrains were in the 90s and new all terrains are near silent.  Old school thinking is that your wheeler should have MTs and your daily should have ATs.  Now with these hybrid AT/MT tires out I dont think the same thing holds true.  If it is your daily and all the offroading it will see is a fireroad then ATs are still the way to go (coopers have a buy 3 get 1 free deal right now at pepboys, replaced worn Toyo AT2s with Discoverer AT3s for half the price of les schwab).  If it is your dedicated wheeler then aggressive MTs or Extreme tires make sense (by dedicated wheeler I mean that street miles are limited to heading to the trail head or 20k miles will take 5+years).  If it is both you wheeler and DD then a Hybrid tire like the Duratrac, ST Maxx, Ridge Grappler, Open Country RT should all be on your radar along with newer MTs with treadwear warranties like the Xtreme MT2 (BFG MT would fall into this category since the tread is known to last 50K easy without a warranty).  (Im personally waiting to hear about real world tread life's of the STT Pro and Grabber X3)

What rig is this for and what size are you looking at?

I have the BFG AT KO2 tires on my F150 and I love them. They are quiet on the pavement (it is my daily driver), work extremely well in the snow, and so far have performed better than expected on the trails. I have never used mud terrain tires so I can't compare to them, but I am very pleased with my tires.

This is going to be for the 89 Blazer. The suburban could use some too, but that will have to wait...

35/12.50/15 will be the size. I would like 37s, but that would require trimming the front fenders (possibly rear too) . .. and I just don't want to get into that added cost etc at the moment.

Blazer is not my daily, so I could go with more aggressive tread. I will look into the tires you mention.  My driving pattern could've described as "heavy mall crawling/riding the kids around on weekends with occasional Posse runs or similar." Haha!

Thank you all for the excellent input.

If I remember correctly that currently has BFG ATs from 2 generations ago.  I think you are pretty safe to go with a more aggressive mud terrain since they will like age out before they wear out.  Pick something that looks cool to you from a major company and you will be happy.
