Has anybody used Boyles Future Technology in Auburn for an alternator rebuild? I am looking to take my 60amp alternator up there and having him make it 130 amp. Using my Powerplant killed my battery when I was refilling my tires on Saturday up in the snow. That winch motor I believe uses 87 amps, so just idiling along and filling tires my alternator probaby isn't putting out much more than 35 amps. So after 3 tires that battery is done.

Cool....I was just talking to my neighbor across the street and he used to work for Placer County and I asked him if had heard of this place and also had high remarks. I guess Placer County takes a lot of the alternators from the snowplows and different heavy equipment to this guy to have them rebuilt.

I had them do that exact conversion over the summer. I wouldn't hesitate to have them do it again. I agree with Justin, the place looks like it was hit by a tornado, but they'll take care of you.
Of course, I said that about Marlin so you may not trust me much anymore. 😀
EDIT: Here's my thread when I was thinking about the conversion. If you want, I can dig up the receipt and see how much it cost. viewtopic.php?f=31&t=3216

Yea if you could find out the price that would be great. Did he test your alternator to see what it was putting out before he did the upgrades? How long was the turn around? I was going to try and get it done before this weekends runs, but i doubt that will happen. I will just bring my CO2 tank with me. I also need to get myself a bigger and bettery battery like the Odyssey.
One of these days I have have to post up the pics of the "quality" ARB install done by MC. The term the ARB tech used when looking at the pics was "Unfortunately you ended up with a bit of a sloppy installation" 😮

He didn't test my alternator. My dash lights were on so it was dead and I wasn't worried. I think the turn around was only a couple of days. It held up just fine on the last snow run but I didn't do much winching. As I remember one of the things they said about the unit was that it produced a lot more amps at idle, not just at peak.

No worries. I am not going to do anything until after the run this weekend. Now I can budget fo it in between buying all that softball equipment that is required for my daughter.

Thats what I need the amps at idle. From what I have been reading mine goes offline at idle and doesn't start to put out until 1100rpm. I might have to rig up some kind of hand throttle for when I am using the compressor.

Try turning on your A/C. It should idle the engine up a bit. I'm not sure if it'll get it to 1100 though.

Well I got the alternator back from Boyles yesterday. I could have picked it up on Tuesday, the day I dropped it off as they have quick turn around, but I had to get to work that afternoon. It looks brand new. He put the 90 amp upgrade in it as well as replaced the brushes as they were worn, but everything else was in good shape. It came to just shy of $128.00. He said you always get more than 90 amps out of the upgrade and my final numbers came in at 75 amps at idle and 128 max. That is almost double from stock. That should make my battery much happier when running that powerplant compressor.
I have about 20 feet of 4 ga wire, so I just need to get some lugs and a cripmer to re due some of the wiring. I hate working on import cars/newer trucks. Everything is so crammed in there. I have no idea how I am going to get to the wires on the starter, as I can't even see them. I doesn't help that I have a shock hoop blocking the way now either.

Thats a good question. It looks like the alternators from 85-91 were the same according to a web site or 2. He mentioned mine was in good shape overall so no bearings had to be replaced. That would have added to the cost. So in once sense it wasn't a "complete" rebuild. Parts that were in good shape were retained. I have seen prices all over the place from yotatech from what he charged people. It seems to be on a case by case decision.
I suppose thats good because he could easily say eveything was shot and needs to be replaced and you would never know the difference and he could charge everyone $180. He's honest and doesn't oversell it to make a quick buck.
