Do you guys ever feel like you have to buy something for your rig just because it's a good deal? I keep thinking I need beadlocks or new used tires. But I know my money would be spent better else where on the rig. I think I need to go to therapy
I just cruz around on pirate and other boards waiting for good deals on things I don't need. So lets hear what you guys have stumbled upon and bought just cuz it was a good deal but not something you needed at the time.
My thing is a little crappy 2wd 1991 toyota pickup to use as my "daily drive" even though my jeep is a 2006 on 37s with minor mods and only 42k miles. The truck has no power steering or ac but my jeep has both. I'm a

My first two front axles (Dana 30 and 44) Aprox. $6000 wasted
My first two rear axles (Dana 35 and 44) Aprox $5000 Wasted
My first transfer case (tera 4 to 1) Aprox $1300 wasted
My first several lift kits (now pretty much custom) Aprox $2000 wasted
My first few set of tires ( 33 and 35's) Aprox $2000 wasted
My first set of Trail Ready beadlocks in 15 inch (can't find many tires with the 15 inch wheel in a 37 or larger anymore) Aprox $1300 wasted
My first couple of front bumpers (still not happy with the custom one I have now) Aprox $1000 wasted
My current rear Wilderness bumper ( going to build myself one I like) Aprox $1000 wasted
The list could go on and on !!!!!!!
I have wasted probably somewhere between $20.000 and $25.000 on my Jeep with stuff I didn't need if I had built it the way I wanted it the first time 😥

Now I don't feel so bad. So are you saying I should just forget my rubi 44's since I plan to get 609's some day?

Not to mention that Jeep 44's, even if they are Rubicon 44's, really aren't all that great of an axle considering how much you pay for them. Now if you've got a set already on your rig, they're great for selling to buy or build something else because they always sell for quite a bit.
I'm currently looking at building a shaved 14-bolt for my next rear axle - I'll probably end up needing 17" rims, which means new rims and tires - but it's all part of the game! Just like everyone else, I've blown a lot of money on different lifts and components, particularly axles. Each time though, I've been able to sell off what I've outgrown, so I don't really see it as a waste, because it's helped to fund the next stage of evolution on the rig. Buying stuff the way I've been doing lately which is for a different application that I customize to work on my rig tends to save quite a bit. For instance, I sold my Warn rocker guards that I had been running for about five years for the same price I paid for my new Sun rocker guards for a CJ8 application shipped to my door. I needed slightly longer guards to go from wheel well to wheel well without flares and they worked out great. I had to spend some time trimming and test-fitting, but overall the new rocker guards cost me some time and no money.
Same thing with my current axles, I sold off a high pinion D30 and TJ D44 with a Detroit which helped to pay for my front D44 and rear 9". I bought empty axles and paid for all the inners that I wanted, shopped around and got a great price on the installation of the gears and locker. The 9" was a bolt-in application, but I had probably 1/2 to 2/3 of the cost recovered by selling off my old parts.

If money was no object - 609 front, 9" rear would be sweet with True Hi 9's. They are nice axles in that they are lightweight and really strong. If you grab the right housing or go aftermarket, 35 or 40 spline is available without anything special needing to done to the housing. Housings are all steel so you can weld right to the center of the housing without special techniques or welding rods. Aftermarket support for 9's is second to none and new products are coming out all the time. If I was to build another 9", I'd go with a manufactured axle like RuffStuff, Diamond or Spidertrax with True Hi 9's. That would be one waaaay nice setup.
