I've noted that some of club members use hand-held CBs instead of mobile.
I purchased the Midland 75-822 so it can used in a number of varying situations BUT the big item is ... what antenna to use while mobile.
What antenna has been found to be the most effective for you and where is the best mounting location? I understand wave propagation, but that is not always the best for the intended use.
Thanks!!

I think that's the same one I have.
Same as Brad, I have my antenna mounted behind the spare. Mine is a Firestik but I haven't had any others to compare with.
I still need to find a good location and I recommend an external speaker (which I still need to get).
It works well but can be difficult to hear at times at higher speeds. (this may not matter since you have a hard top)
I'm happy with mine and like the fact that I can detach the wired base and attach a battery pack and mobile antenna and go hand held. (not that I've had to use it that way yet)

I have a Cobra CB with all the controls on the microphone, and a FireStik, works great plenty of distance. The secrect is to make sure the antenna is tuned properly and not to mount the antenna to low on your rig, when transmitting and receiving the signals will reflect off your rig resulting in your signal being attenuated...the shorter the antenna less distance, mine is 4.0' long.... 😀

I need to get a new antenna also, had trouble hearing on the last run with my little 1 footer. I'm planning to mount mine with a spring and have about 2 1/2ft sticking up higher than the roof. Probably get a 4 or 5 ft Firestik or similar type whip. I have a SWR meter to turn if you need to borrow.

I chose the Wilson Flex Antenna. Liked the picture and plan to mount it on the rollbar.

This is what I've used for several years now and it's worked very well. I don't use a spring with it since the antenna is so flexible. I can bend it and touch the ends together without hurting it.

I like the flex antenna as well, but I think I'd run my next one with a really stiff spring. I broke two of them. My problem was largely due to a poor mounting location choice, but I think a spring would have saved at least one of those antennas. Both snapped at the point that the antenna met the metal. Doesn't hurt to have a spring and it's cheap insurance.
