Changing Flowmaster to OEM muffler?

My Toyo came with a header and custom exhaust with a flowmaster muffler. Problem is that I'm old and don't like the noise. Anybody got some first hand knowledge about the consequences of switching back to the OEM muffler or something quieter. How much freeway power might be lost? I've added sound deading materials to lots of vehicles, but it doesn't help the low frequency noise. I actually might consider switching the header back to an exhaust manifold just for the noise. Headers and free flowing mufflers rob low end torque, but that's not really an issue with my gearing. Its more a lost of top end and falling behind all you straight 6 guys.

Mufflers really don't add any real horsepower despite what the advertisements tell you.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

Headers will help you flow better but will not increase noise. If too loud check a few things:

1 - Make sure exhaust pipe is not terminating under your truck. If so, add length to side or out back.
2 - If you have a straight piece of pipe long enough to add resonator, do so. They are short and will take the edge off less expensively and you increase back pressure very little. A little added BP will help with mid-range performance (in general).
3 - If you are concerned about the power pulses in a "tuned exhaust" then you'd need to go back to factory everything which probably isn't necessary. Issue is usually too little rather than too much BP when modifying exhausts. Again, the resonator may be the way to go ... at least it will be the quickest and cheapest way to find out.

As far as keeping up, maybe we need to slow down? No Toyo left behind! (Sorry, couldn't resist).

Thanks Mr. T.

I like the idea of extending the tailpipe farther out the back. I'll have to experiment with that.

I am running into the same problem. I have a stock 03 muffler on my TJ Rubi (that is leaking) Some say I can get a new muffler from Chrysler until the 8 year of 80k mile mark. Does anyone know if this is true? Also I hunt quite a bit and like my exhaust quiet. As they say in drag racing chrome and noise in this case dont make it go!

Here is an idea... Please notice the make of this rig. mr-green hahahaha!
