Funny question, but when should one decide to stop daily driving their 4x4 machine? I drive from Roseville to Folsom almost twice a day in my jeep on 37s. It's currently my only vehicle option as my wife drives our other car. I constantly think about picking up a little beater car to commute in, but every time it crosses my mind I decide I would rather spend the money on the jeep and keep daily driving it.

My jeep is an 06 and it just rounded 70k miles on the odometer. I hate seeing the miles climbing and the tires disappearing every day. rant When did everyone switch from daily driving their rigs?

Um...what?

My TJ became a rec vehicle at 3 years (when I paid it off).
My JKU was never a daily driver.

Previous TJ was never a daily driver. Previous CJ was never a daily driver. Previous YJ(1) adn YJ(2) were both 100% daily drivers.

Mine stopped being a daily driver when there was too much risk of breaking it on the weekend and not being able to get to work on Monday.

Yup, when too many things started to break I decided I needed another daily driver.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

I agree with Fred and John. I was tired of worrying about not being able to get to work.

Or work 24hr shifts so you can get a ride from your wife, every few days - and then fix your ride the 3-4 days off in a row you have!

I'm in the same boat. TJ on 37s and I've swapped in a full-width Dana 44 in the front with cross-over steering, locking hubs, etc. My Jeep still drives great on the road, so I don't mind it as a DD. Plus, the more time I get to spend in my Jeep, the better. The love affair still hasn't ended after twelve years together...

The cost factor has also crossed my mind. Fortunately, the most distance I ever have to drive my Jeep is to the airport, and work reimburses me for the mileage. But only getting 12-13 mpg, I'd be more inclined to get another car if I had a lot of driving to do. As for the tires, if you're not running really soft rubber, I figure the $1500 a new set of Procomp Xterrains will cost me every 4-5 years isn't too bad compared to the cost of owning a second car.

I'm more apt to have a spare car as a DD due to breakage. When possible, wink I try to only break my front axle, since I can unlock the hubs and still drive home.

It would be nice to spring $4000-$5000 on a used Civic and have that second car though. Added bonus is that when the Civic dies, you can go all Monster Truck on it and crush it with your Jeep!

The biggest problem I run into with having my Jeep as a DD is the inability move any thing larger than a medium dog. Any time I buy plywood or steel I have to get a friends truck. If I were to get a DD on the cheep I would buy a compact pickup truck. Something like a Toyota, Ford or Mitsubishi with a 4 cylinder. I would get good gas mileage and could move all those parts to fix my broken Jeep. Then when I win the Lottery I could turn it into a pre-runner....

I just steal Jeff's truck for those times. Although 4 brand new 37 inch goodyears should fit in the back of your LJ without the rear seat.

Um...what?

What if you were to get a Toyota as a wheeler/DD? Pretty much unbreakable and you can haul stuff in them. 😛 clap

Believe me, I'm thinking about it. If I have to get rid of the truck to buy a JKU I know I'll miss having a truck. Since I already have a dedicated wheeling rig I thought a 4 door Tacoma on 35s would be a nice DD and family wheeling rig. Plus I could use it to haul a few little things once in a while.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

You remember that... No, I actually moved 2'x8' plywood last month but I was really careful!

My XJ hauls stuff ... and is warm in winter and cool in summer. 4x8 plywood, not so much but almost anything else goes.

I bought my Jeep as a toy and never daily drove it. I have owned a few jeeps in my life and I hated driving them daily. The new JK line is a different story. It is more like a car.

Consider a second set of smaller road tires for street use.

Love my Jeep! We are joined at the hip and it will always be my daily driver unless I OOPS on the trail 😥
Then I would have to steel Joe's Jeep and paint it GREEN (Oh and needs to be a little higher so I don't leave
skid marks lol
