I'm trying to get my Jeep smogged. I had evap codes so I've been replacing hoses and driving to clear the computer so I can take it in and get it tested. So far, in the last three days, I've put on 350 miles, all at ~35 miles an hour. That's 10 hours in my Jeep driving back roads. I'm starting to HATE my Jeep 🙄
I used to wheel a lot. . .

That will reset it, but then the computer goes through a bunch of diagnostics which take quite a while to complete. If you take it in for a smog check and it is still running diagnostics, they won't test it. So, i have to run it and then plug in the reader to see if it's ready to test.

Wish I had remembered this post. Just failed smog test because I had disconnected battery over last couple of weeks of no use. :banghead: Test station said the "computer" thinks I'm trying to "cheat" my smog test now and failed me, however the tester said I shouldn't have to drive hundreds of miles to reset the computer if I do the following:
1. Start with about 1/2 tank of gas
2. Drive approx. 50 highway miles no faster than 65 mph
3. Drive around 10 miles in town (stop/go)
4. Return to test station WITHOUT shutting off engine
I'm scheduled to retest Sun morning after I follow this procedure. Hopefully, this will work!
Will post results.

Grrrr. Procedure cleared all but three sensors...evap., oxygen, and oxygen heater. Ran another 20 miles and cleared oxygen, now I'm down to two. Shop says evap can take weeks depending on manuf. but I can pass test if I get it down to only one sensor failure. Letting the jeep cool down a bit and will try later to see if I can clear oxy heater (more cold starts). What a pain!

Hahaha. . .Been there. Now try doing it with a broken suspension and not able to drive over 35 mph. THAT was a PAIN!

Seems like a crazy system. Shouldn't it just check and see that everything is ok and go from there? What if you did have something actually wrong that you fixed? Would it clear then or would you still have to drive all over?

I agree. If the goal is less emissions then NOT driving seems to be a pretty good way to minimize emissions....that is as long as your battery doesn't go dead, or you don't disconnect it. I had actually passed all emissions tests, but the problem was since I disconnected the battery the vehicles on-board computer lost all its information. Sounds like today's smog tests are not just testing how you vehicle is running at that point in time, but how you vehicle has ran in the past too. To comment on your question, if a part WAS bad you would probably WANT to reset the computer anyway so that you could erase the history of what was actually bad....hmmm maybe that's why they default a vehicle to fail until a clean history is re-recorded. Anyway, I did finally pass today. After last code check I let the vehicle cool for 3 hours, restarted it, drove for another 10 miles and was able to clear the evap code (still had one code but you can pass with just one)
