So, I lost a U-Joint in my rear DS. Removed the DS, engaged 4-HI, and started running in FrontWD. Don't want to replace until I put in the D44 as the DS might need the length to be adjusted.
Any thoughts on how long I can run like this? Is freeway speed OK?
The D44 will go in Saturday 8/18 if my plans hold, then I can take to Driveline Specialties in West Sac for review and rebuild.

while crawling in low gear, I smacked a big rock dead center on my front diff; which resulted in bending the rear output shaft on my transfer case.
You'll get LOTs of opinons on this.....I'll just share my experience.
I pulled my rear drive shaft and drove it in four wheel (essentially front wheel drive) for about two weeks while I saved up for a transfer case with a SYE.
During that time I drove minimally and stayed away from any tight turns. Driving at highway speeds was no problem.
HOWEVER - somewhere during that time I did some damage because while driving in a straight line, that aweful "CRUNCH" every 20 feet showed up telling me that I broke a tooth on my ring and pinion.....
I wouldn't advise it on pavement unless you're ready to do more work.
Anyone got an extra 3:73 ring and pinion for a Dana 30??????

Thanks, George.
Yeah, first time I turned I felt a little "bounce" in the steering wheel so started taking corners with a larger radius. It is louder than when in RearWD, but definitely not unpleasant.
As I work from home, there will be minimal miles until the D44 gets put in at which time I'll remove the front DS until the D30 gets re-geared (don't want any inadvertent TC engagement).

Here's my experience. I broke two rear ends on my old Land Cruiser. I drove home from the Rubicon once and Fordyce once in front (four) wheel drive in a 64 FJ40 with 39" swampers and a V8 at highway speeds both times. I definitely had some torque type steering but I made it home safe both times. In both cases I limited my driving to getting home and didn't have any negative side effects.
Assuming your front end is well maintained (oiled/greased/etc) unless you drive it a bunch, I'd run it until the 18th and minimize the amount you drive whenever possible. Of course this advice doesn't even come with a taillight type warranty so take it for what it's worth. 😀

LOL. OK, I understand the warranty situation. Got Ronie's car back a day or so early from repairs ... so the XJ should see no more than in and out of the garage until the 18th.

Talk to Marc at 4wheelparts. They throw those things out all the time when upgrading the front end of TJs. Should be a cheap option!

Your daughter is building a Sammi? She needs to contact Specialsoundman on this forum. He's had his Sammi for years.
Also BKGM built a Sammi years ago and has BIGTIME Sammi smarts as well.
I'll confirm the 18th in a couple of days ... can always use help.

After looking things over, and needing a LONG therapy session, I started the axle swap on my own. Needed help from Willie one time to get the D44 onto the floor jack to lift into place.
There is a HUGE weight difference between a C8.25 and a D44!
All that is left today is to connect the E-brake, bleed the brakes, swap the driveshaft, and put the tires back on.
This afternoon is the test drive.
