Gents (and ladies): I have been shopping for 37s, and Dale showed me that these tires are for sale on ebay for a pretty good price (free shipping!):
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Fede.....38;vxp=mtr
Anyone have any experience with them, or comments on this deal?
this is for my K5. I also need to buy some 17" rims, if anyone has any leads/advice on that.
thanks!

Buck,
I found the below info on the tires... I know Federal is a well known tire company. Can't really give you any personal references on this tire... Looks like it could be good.

I found a guy on Craigslist that sells military surplus tires either MTR's or KM2's 37" but they are 16.5 wheels but at 90 to 95% tread they're only like $180 each.
He also sells Hummer beadlocks re-centered in your lug pattern you can go double beadlocks and rock rings a set of 5 runs about $1600_1800 that includes the above mentioned tires
I have his number if your interested in getting in touch with him. I am getting a set when I do my Toyota axles on my rig

Be sure to check the manufacture date on any used tires you consider purchasing. Old tires could be a waste of money. They will be stiff and not hook up off road, plus greatly increase your emergency stopping distance. Hopefully these surplus tires are stored out of the weather and not too old.

These are cheap tire and best suited for donuts in farmers fields, not so much rock crawling. They are known for decent treadlife for a mud tire (20 to 30k usefull life for offroad) but also known for being incredibly noisy after 5-10k miles and internal band failure, especially on heavier rigs. Everyone I know who runs them has swapped them out for something else after 10k miles usually for difficulty keeping them balanced or noise. If you are going to buy these tires I would only buy them from a local shop so you have a face to talk to if you have any issues. Most tires in this size are going to start in the $350each range so they are a big initial savings if you can accept the risk.
All that said, I cannot at all recommend this tire selection given other similarly priced options. Specifically when pepboys is doing buy-3-get-1-free on General Grabbers with installation in 37x12.5r17. Name brand tire, installation company to stand behind the tire, and its actually cheaper to get it installed with a hazard warranty than just to buy the tires. Considering the e-bay auction price doesn't include tax or installation the generals will probably end up being slightly cheaper when said and done. https://www.pepboys.com/tires/.....5/17/00774

x2 on checking the tires age. Operation Iraqi Freedom ended in 2011 so the amount of surplus used tires has dropped off significantly meaning most available are going to be at least 6 yrs old.
Also careful with re-centered hummer double beadlocks, most aren't properly jigged during the re-centering process so the runout (wobble) will be too high for street use.
Used to see re-centered hummer locks with surplus tires all the time but that has all but faded away due to the rarity of 16.5 tires and the crazy weight of a re-centered h1 wheel+rock ring+insert (~50-75 lbs before the tire depending on if rubber or PVC insert)

Excellent, thanks, I am going to do this. I got a bid at America's Tire for 4 of these tires (General Grabber) at $307 each. . so this Pep Boys deal beats the pants off America's Tires.
Thanks again. . and congrats are in order!

America's tire will usually price match too. I have worked with both and America's tire had better service but pepboys also does discounted alignments when you buy tires.
