Whit3nuckle will/may/hopes to replace his front axle at some point and currently has a D44 with pumpkin on the driver side. Is/would this be compatible to an XJ?

You can cut down and retube the axle to get the pumpkin where you want it and get the width where you want it. Just comes down to money.

I just saw an article on this. The cost was pretty minor if you do it yourself.

It would have to be narrowed or you could run spacers in the rear. Also, I'm not sure what your rear d44 bolt pattern is. The dodge will be 5x5.5. The dodge is running a unit bearing hub which means it is always engaged in the front axle. The only un-engagement would be at the transfer case, ie. shifting tcase to 2wd. But the front end will still spin. Some don't like this cause it's more wear and tear. The main thing about unit bearings are that they are not rebuildable like normal hub and spindle. This can be fixed but would require swapping ford kunckles and outers on the housing. Not really a big deal but more time and money to accumulate parts. But in the mean time you could run the unit bearings.

Um...what?

Conversion spacers can adapt the rear to 5x5.5.

I am unsure how unit bearings require engagement up front, unless you're referring to them not having hubs? Hubs on the front would eliminate the wear and tear concern even with the unit bearings but not have the rebuild ability.

I mean that the axle shafts will spin and so will the driveline even in 2wd with the dodge unit bearings.

Um...what?

Is that because they lack hubs? My 60 is a unit bearing and nothing spins when not engaged. However my front end isn't off of a dodge.

Yes,lack of hubs. They are set up like how my rubicon LJ was. No hubs, unit bearings and spinning shafts and driveline in 2wd. Burns gas too.

Um...what?

Sounds a lot like what the XJ has already: unit bearings, no hubs, etc. Doesn't affect mileage as a number of folks have removed the front DS and found no difference. Probably hidden by lifts, larger tires, etc.

And I only WISH I could do mods like this myself. Not being a welder limits me to pestering my buddies. I'm looking more and more at (1) modifying the D30 and (2) buying a G2 axle assembly from 4 Wheel Parts.

Your D30 is a HP, so a shaft upgrade and some hubs (and probably a selectable locker) would be good enough for your needs.

I agree with Brad. If you did those upgrades to your HP30 it should be way strong enough for 35s. Plus, increased ground clearance...

I used to wheel a lot. . .

OK ... that sounds like a wrap on this topic.

You may also want to start rooting around for a built D30 from an XJ. I think you could find one with hubs, or a selectable locker already installed for cheap.

I sold my LP 30 with an ARB, 4.88 gears and an HD tierod + new u-joints for $150.

Just to put a nail in the coffin, I agree with Brad and John. If I was in your shoes, I would keep the 30 and build it. It will be perfect for 35's.

Um...what?
