Gearing: 4.88
Crown Vic rear disc brakes
stock LSD
raised shock mounts
Ruffstuff Heavy duty 3/8" thick welded diff cover
Re-built 4 years ago.

$650 in Reno. Sounds like a no-brainer but want some input.

Oh, and being out of an XJ, all should bolt-in save the brake lines and cables. Might need to do something about the pinion yoke as well.

Why would you have to change the yolk? Wouldn't it bolt right in? Just curious...

That would be a great axle for your rig. Good Luck.

Spoke to the seller, really nice guy. Looks like we've struck the deal. As it is still in his XJ (he has the replacement) and the holidays are upon us, it'll likely be after the first of the year before the exchange actually takes place. So that will take care of one end! clap

Now, about that HP30 in front ..... :dunno:

HP30's a readily available. You can grab one from a wrecker for about $150. Then, just build it to match the rear's ratio. I suggest selectable lockers. Saving for them is worth it!

Oh ... I have an HP30 in front! Just need to start planning what to do to it. Gearing as soon as the 44 goes in.

Selectable locker for sure on both ends at some point. Would like to get something up front at the same time I re-gear.

Well they did until 98 or 99 when they started getting the same LP30 as the TJs. Very popular swap is the HP30 into TJs.

Will be "taking ownership" of the D44 sometime after January 7th. Thought I'd hold off on the install for a few weeks while I keep up my search for a front D44 so I don't run the risk of re-gearing and spending the money twice.

Thought I'd close this thread with a quick note that the owner and I are meeting on Tuesday (1/17) to complete the deal. clap

Now, if anyone knows of a D44 front that is available, keep me in mind.

I won't be swapping the rear for a bit just to see what might shake out in the next month or 2.

It's such a trick to get things timed right isn't it. The whole contortion act in order to streamline things. We can't close this thread! Not yet. 😀

When it comes time to install the D44, I'll put it on my build thread though it should be pretty much a "bolt-in deal".

The only questions might be (1) D44 yoke and (2) E-brake cable ... though it came out of an XJ so all might jut be a cake walk in those areas as well.

Picked up the D44 this morning! mr-green

The guy did GREAT work and even threw in the E-brake cables, shims and axle brackets. Depending on finances, will install then re-gear front in February or March. party

So you're also on the lookout for D44 front. Timeframe on that? Why, b/c who knows if there is some fortunate alignment of the moon, stars, comets for when my d44 front w/ 4.10s becomes available....

If i'm not mistaken, the D44 on your rig has the pumpkin on the passenger side. Can you confirm this for me?

For my XJ, the pumpkin needs to be on the driver side.

Driver's side. Only thing I'm not sure if you'd need to be sensitive to is the unit hub bearing assembly. XJ being much lighter may not be an issue. I have no clue and I'm sure you veterans would know for this application. This D44 has extra flanging around the pumpkin, a feature of the Off Road Edition Ram. That's about it, but thought to mention it.

Huh. I'll do a little more research to check this out. In the meantime, maybe someone will chime in who knows for sure.

The only thing that comes to mind now is axle width and I'll see how that is dealt with. Maybe I'll just start a new thread so we don't get front and rear D44s mixed up.
