My Jeep drives so much nicer now with the ARB locker I've been driving it to work. Today I went to lunch and when I got in to head back to work it started right up but I couldn't push the button on the shifter to get it out of park. (Yes, I had my foot on the brake.) I finally got it into gear and got it home but its sitting outside with the same problem again. I suspect it's the switch that tells the transmission you've got your foot on the brake. Does anyone know, is that the regular stop light switch under the dash or is there a different switch somewhere?
TJ specs: 2000 TJ, 6 cylinder, factory 3 speed automatic transmission

Heres the wiring diagram:

Looks like a series circuit with fuse, brake shift interlock solenoid and the brake light switch. If the brake lights are actually working, maybe the solenoid is stuck/broken?

Lawn tractors are not made to cut grass more than about 5 or 6 inches. You are trying to cut down a forest in your yard

I've got good news and bad news.
I'll start with the bad news. I did a Bill and ran into the house with the Jeep. I figured out if I disconnected the brake pedal from the brake booster rod I could shift it into gear. So I disconnected, shifted it into neutral, temporarily reconnected (hint), started it and idled into the garage. When I stepped on the brake the pedal went to the floor and I ran into all the Jeep junk I've got stored in front of where I park which rammed into the laundry room wall. I think there's just some minor garage-side sheetrock damage to the wall but won't know for sure until I move everything. My lesson learned, don't ever drive a vehicle without the retaining clip on the brake peddle/booster rod connection, no matter how far your going! Time for a .
The good news is the impact seems to have jarred loose the shifter/brake interlock mechanism. It seems to be working fine now.
I did find that the interlock is separate from the brake light switch. I also found out I don't have any brake lights, not sure what the problem is but I quit for the night before I do any more damage.

I hit my house and got new seats.
You hit your house and fixed your trans.
I think Kevin should run into his house... he might get 60's!

Don't think that couldn't happen. I broke mine in the parking lot at Safeway.
Eric broke a driveline in the parking lot at the mini golf place in Reno. Of course he was doing brake stands so that probably didn't help.

I pulled the shifter handle off and checked it out. Everything inside the handle and shifter itself looks fine. Its still working since it's "adjustment" Friday night. I did end up having to replace my brake light switch today. I found out the brake lights weren't coming on and traced it down to a defective switch. But the two don't seem to be related because it was shifting correctly even when the lights weren't working.
