Anyone working on any projects?
I'm waiting for the new Mopar Dana 60s to be available. Also been keeping an eye on the new Trail Worthy Fab transfer cases (maybe someday). http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum.....-case.html

The latest on the Suzuki…. My stock Carb is on it’s way to Florida to be rebuilt, I’m going back to the stock carb. (at least for the summer) Harley conversion didn’t work very good last run. Could be due to the engine having such high milage. Will rebuild my extra engine and then try harley carb with fresh motor.
Last run 5th gear started acting up, binding shifting into 5th gear. I found out that maybe my clutch plate & throwout bearing might be manufactured to wrong size (too wide/thick) and is messing up my transmission (per transmission rebuilder) so that may be why it’s getting hard to shift into 5th gear. So am going to have to pull transmission to check them & exchange the transmission.
Was real please with locking the rear shackles so it only has one to flex rather than the double set up.. It was so much more "stable" on angles and didn't feel so much like it was going to tip over as easy.
If I can't build it, then it's something that should be bought.

It has been pretty quiet around here lately.
I don't have much going on for projects. I got my roof rack installed again so I can carry our canoe and modified my bike rack to fit the Jeep a little better. I guess I did have one "project" - I replaced the dash speakers again. Those little oval speakers in TJ's just don't last very long. I bought the adapter brackets and went to round speakers this time. Hopefully they'll last longer.

Hopefully we can see you Fred at the meetings sometime and out on the trails when we get the runs going
Yeah, I feel bad about how inactive I've been lately too. My work schedule often conflicts with the meetings. Management here as declared the second Thursday of the month as one of the few days we can work on servers. I've been watching the calendar for runs I can attend but that hasn't worked out too well either.

I bent the poo out of a sway bar link and axel mounting tab the other day –
– because of this I’m thinking maybe I need longer links? They are 10in bolt to bolt or at least one still is now
- this was also the first test run for my buddies garage build
- I think 86 wj frame early 90s wj body - mid 90s Grand Cherokee 4 liter np 231 transfer Grand Wagoner Springs and 09 jk rubi axels

We share a building with the Sacramento Metro Fire Department. My first thought when you said strobing led's was the lights I see on the front of many of their unmarked or personal vehicles. I was curious why you might have emergency lights like theirs. I guess yours aren't quite as exciting.
Congrats on the new job though.

Why did you have your sway bar links replaced and with what as I too am having sway bar link issues.
I have yet to determine what links I need to get to solve my problem or if it was just a random event and just replace them with what I have
Mine are the front sway bar links. The problem arises when you have an e-sway bar and only disconnect one end, thinking you get flexibility with that approach. What basically happens is you still have an engaged swaybar while driving like you think its not. I corrected the assumption but loosened the joints before I noticed and fixed the flaw in my thinking. The new joints will be much quieter for me and I will use them appropriately in the future.
My rear sway bar is factory, but I run the RE extensions which are basically poly bushings and straight-rod ends. I’ve never had any problems with them, nor had one fail.
Based on your front-end problem, I'd suggest a disconnectable sway bar rod set and remove it when wheeling so you don't see the problem your experiencing. One thing from the pictures concerns me. Your axle tab is bent to the driver side. That is lateral movement on your front end, which is not supposed to occur. Be sure to check all your front bushings, particularly drag link and track bar. One of those bushings is likely loose (or bad), causing play that contributes to what you experienced.

Fred maybe we should get together you installed a roof rack and I broke mine. Got a little over zealous strapping the boys bicycles down. Finally got it put back together tonight.
I've been busy too. We picked up a very used pop up trailer and on top of all the "normal" summer stuff I joined Search and Rescue. Can't remember the last time I had a free weekend!

How is search and rescue?
It's fun. Lot's of training but I've learned a fair amount and bought some cool backpacking gear in the process.
Sweet!! I'm heading out on a 6 day trip on the 19th. Plenty of room if you want to join. Going from Interstate 80 to Hwy 50. 64 miles!!!
Um...what?

Sweet. Random question. Do you use some sort of air mattress? Trying to decide how much weight I want to carry.

I carry an rei air mattress. I forget which one. It has the air rails along the side. It was a pretty good R value for warmth. You can get a neo air for a super light pad, but you pay for it.

The paying for it is what is killing me! I want my 3 day pack with water to be 25-30 lbs and that gets expensive. Need to get my cooking weight down, improve my rain gear, and figure out the whole sleeping thing.
It's crazy because we had 3 SAR guys come in and give us some cold weather survival training. Between the 3 of them they figure they put about 10k in gear on display that they carry every mission.

Wow, That is insane!!! I believe it though. My pack for 5 days weighed approximately 40-45ish lbs. I really wanted to get my weight down for this next trip. But after sitting down with a good friend who is an ultra light hiker, he said if you can't give something up, expect to lighten it by paying a minimum of $100 per pound. I found this to be true.
I made my own sleeping quilt vs a sleeping bag. My quilt is right around 3lbs, were my sleeping bag was 4 lbs. Quilts can range from $200-500 easily. I managed to make mine for about $120. By far, the best piece of gear I have besides my jet boil. Which isn't light either.
Um...what?
