I read in the latest 4WD & Sport Utility magazine there's a new brake booster/master cylinder upgrade for CJ's, YJ's & TJ's from Dave's Custom's Unlimited. They've got both a 7" and 8" dual diaphragm brake boosters. I'm thinking about trying it to replace my hydroboost. Has anyone heard of their product?

I will let you know how they are. I ordered mine last week. I talked to him and he swears his product will stop my 40 inch tires as good as the hydroboost if not better. Nice part if it works, I will have the added power back to my steering that the hydro has been robbing.

I can't wait to hear how it works. In the article it looks like they use the Corvette master cylinder or one like it. That's what worked well for me except for being overpowered by the hydroboost. I had two Corvette master cylinders fail after about a year's use. Hopefully with the vacuum boosters they'll last longer. Did you order the 8" or the 7" brake booster? I too am hoping to separate my steering and braking systems.

Not sure if it 7 or 8. We talked and I told him what I was running for axles, brakes, and tires. He said he had a set up that was bolt in and will work as good if not better than the hydroboost brakes. We will see!

I have to fix it and put it back together before I can decide to sell it or not. I still need to replace the bent 60 axle, replace bent and broke drive shaft, etc!! I have the Atlas out and I got the transfercase adapter fixed and re-installed. Once it is all back together, I will decide on selling it or not. I am still leaning towards getting rid of it though.

Well, I'm working from home today and was staring at the article hanging on the wall about Dave's booster/master cylinder combo. I just got off the phone with Dave and ordered it.
The kit he generally recommends and the one I ordered includes the 8" booster and a master cylinder derived from the Corvette master cylinder.
We talked about my current set-up and he recommended I remove the 2 lb residual pressure valves regardless of whether or not I install his kit. He also suggested while running his kit to remove the factory proportioning valve altogether. I'm not entirely sure about that idea but who knows. Since I already have direct lines for the front brakes and an adjustable rear proportioning valve he said just to open it up all the way and make any small adjustments as needed.
I sure hope this works as well as he says it should.

I have been using a 8"D.D. ( might be a 9" it was a tight fit.) booster and a1.25" bore master for about 2 years now and like it a lot. The master is a little too big for the stock size calipers I think, because it feels like it hydro locks if you jump on the petal too quickly . If you just use light input it will slam you forward and cause tour seatbelt to lock. When this master goes I plan to replace it with a 1.125" Durango master and reservoir and get rid of the metric to NPT lines and use the stock metric ones. This is what we did to Lee's after his axle swap.I also use power slot cryo rotors with Hawk HPS in front and EBC green stuff in back. The little rubber thingy in the do-hickey has been removed also.

OOPS, I am using Ford pads in the rear (as speced by the engineer who did the brake modeling for me) cant get to the the box to see what mfg. and part # cause Sue's rides are in the way and I dont feel like moving them. Hers is using Green Stuff in the rear with the thingy still in the do-hickey.

I installed my new parts today and have a mixed opinion of the results. This booster & master cylinder are far better than any other vacuum powered booster/master combo that I've tried in the past. Normal braking feels really good, but it still seems like I'm not getting enough pressure for emergency braking. I can lock up the tires at about 45 but it takes a lot of leg pressure to do it.
I did take a bit of a shortcut though. Dave said to remove the residual pressure valves and preferably remove my adjustable proportioning valve. I didn't have the fittings I would need so I left them in. I'm wondering if there may be a restriction in the lines because of all the extra parts & adapters.
I'm also thinking about ordering the EBC Yellow Stuff brake pads that MrBlaine likes. I've got the EBC Green Stuff pads on the front now but only have Napa pads on the rear.

I think I've got my brakes working pretty well now. I removed the residual pressure valves and punched out the restrictor valve rather than purchase new fittings. And I installed the new EBC Yellowstuff front brake pads and Greenstuff rear pads. Apparently EBC doesn't make the Yellowstuff pads for the rear of a '98 Ford Explorer. The brake pedal feels much more like normal car brakes now than it did with the hydroboost and the Jeep stops nicely. It still feels like there may be a little more room for improvement though.
Maybe I can get one of you guys to try driving/stopping my Jeep some time so I can get an unbiased opinion.
