After talking with some oil techs, I learned some new information on Synthetic vs blend vs conventional oil.

They said any car with less than 4 years or 40k miles can go straight from conventional oil to full synthetic. Any car that is older, or has higher mileage should go from conventional to blend, before going to full synthetic. The reason for this is because conventional oil doesn't have the lubricating propers of full synthetic. However, full synthetic will remove deposits left by conventional oil and conventional oil deposits stop seal leaks (in place of lubricating the seals). Cars need the blend oil to start re-lubricating the seals before the deposits are removed.

This (apparently) is why an older car that goes from conventional to full synthetic oil may suffer serious oil leaks.

Good luck!

That's pretty much the conclusion we came to with Eric's car. The synthetic molecule is also smaller than the conventional oil molecule which doesn't help the issue either.

Why would going to a blend first help? Either way, the gunk is going to disappear and you're going to start burning/leaking oil unless things are pretty tight. Plus, I've heard that most older cars aren't designed with tight enough tolerances to go to synthetic at all.

I don't plan to switch any of my cars anytime soon. I'm not sure I really see any benefit at this point. Seems like a lot of marketing to me.

I'm full synthetic in one car, and blend in the other two.

Look at my jeep - 8 years and no smoke, or leaks! lol

I'll ruin my mileage if I flat tow my jeep to the hammers 😡

I just went back to conventional, I certainly don't see the advantage of synthetics unless it's required by the manufactuer I'll stick to the dinosaurs too.

If you do it correctly Wranglers don't record the mileage when you flat tow.
