Don's in the market for a new front bumper for his TJ Unlimited. I have no idea what he's going to want, but he did say he might as well get one he can mount a winch to later.

What would you recommend?

I like the Hanson Sierra Shorty but they don't make it any more. Somebody does, but I can't remember who it is. Maybe Kilby, I think.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

I've got the Hanson Sierra 50" bumper and like it. Kilby has picked up production of the Sierra bumper now, and jacked up the prices.

Another bumper similar to the Sierra bumper is Currie's front bumper. Surprisingly, it's even a little less expensive than Kilby's. But I'm not sure it works with the factory front sway bar.

I like my Fabtech, but it limits the types of winches you can install because it's so compact. There are lighting mounts that sit right over the area where the winch gets mounted.

There are bumpers I really like...then there are bumpers I would buy.

The difference is cost. A front bumper only has to do two things; hold a winch and take a hit. Therefore, I only buy cheap front bumpers that are strong. I can't see spending over $100 for one.

I realize that not everybody thinks the same way I do and would also like the bumper to look nice and be fancy. If that's the case, I'd look at the Kilby or maybe have one custom built with a grill hoop and other goodies.

Don's pretty frugal so I don't think he'd be one to look for a fancy bumper.

You know, I haven't seen how badly he damaged his stock bumper yet. Does anyone know if the ends could just be cut off? Or did he bend it somewhere between the frame rails?

Not me. I like lots of chrome and as a high a price tag as possible. I think I saw one for $900, but it had stainless accents instead of Chrome. 😯

I paid a guy $100 to build me a front bumper and it works just fine, though it may not win any creativity awards.
