Thanks Guys for the discussion, It has helped me to figure out what I'm going to do. Tell the boys the collage fund is gone....... LOL 😛
Seriously, After I get the transfer case gear change done I'll start a savings plan to get a switchable locker for the rear for sure.
If I can't build it, then it's something that should be bought.

Are you going to leave the front open?

You're making that up. 😀
Remember this? That's with a longish wheelbase (110+), locked front a rear, and a reasonably light rig - especially since I was rocking my soft top on that run. I learned how to work with it over time but for my money there's no competition in the snow.

Just another arm pit to through into the discussion, I would think long and hard about throwing a $1000 locker in a samurai axle.
Sammy axles are great for your tire size but going up can be bad. I've had two sammies and I'd consider toyota axles some day. But again it's all in what you want to do.
Um...what?

That's a really good point.

Good point.
And now we see how simple decisions get compounded and we end up with $50,000.00 rigs
As long as our wives don't know we're okay. Haha!!

I'm wanting to lock front also. Most lockers for Samurai require to change the axles to 26 spline.
More expense
And yes a $1000 ARB locker in a Suzuki Axle is a lot.
And yes the Toyota axle would be the next step up. But I have a wierd "stay stock" as possable thing.
Same reason staying with the stock 1.3L engine.

They're so capable stock if you're not going to get crazy with tire size I think it'll work great for you.
I was on a run once with a handful of pretty well built rigs. Four of us couldn't make it up one icy hill without winching. One guy in a CJ5 with a small block and a heavy foot made it. We were spooling in our winches at the top of the hill when a mostly stock Samurai came right up it. They're so light and small that some of the stuff they can do is amazing.

I like it now with the 31" tires & the current ride height. It still behaves on the road as far as handling. I think also if I go any higher Lori wouldn't ride in it unless I have a step ladder. 🙄 And I think for what we're going to do I don't think we'll need to go up any more. We'll see. With putting in the 6.5 to 1 transfer case gears it should work real nice.
I just realized a lot of the discussion on this thread was in regards to driving in snow. I'll do snow driving but that is not my goal in this build, It's rock/trail runs & daily driver. Wonder if that changes any of the thinking?
That's why I was thinking a limited slip in rear, don't think on the road a locker other than ARB/switchable would be good. Then start calculating/saving for the front. As far as front.... I see three basic ways to go. (1) ARB has a 22 spline locker $1000, no axle change. (2) Change axles to 26 spline chromoly axles $400, & ARB locker $1000. (3) Change axles to 26 spline chromoly axles about $400, & sparton locker $250 (already have). I know the second would be the best, but cost.... I'm thinking that the third way would be the best way with cost factor and I really "should" beef up the front axles anyway ("only" $400 more). Plus if I ever get a big inheritance I could get the the ARB.
If I can't build it, then it's something that should be bought.

I have a front a third member built with lock right and 26 spline front chrome moly axles used very little. all are 26 spline so the third will fit the rear of Samurai as well .ratio is 3.73 (stock)

If it's on Pirate you can get it for 200, or trade for some stereo equipment...
