Finally had a chance to pull the cover off the rear this evening. Jacked one side up and spun the tire and the gears look okay. It looks like the grinding was the pinion gear rubbing on the ARB.
Current plan is to get the right size socket for the pinion nut, loosen, apply red loctite, and then tighten and torque. Then I'll take it for a spin and see how it rides and sounds.
