In round numbers, what does it cost to do a CA smog legal motor swap? Any tips on making it as painless as possible? Just trying to play out some options in my head. mr-green

don’t really know why you would go through all the trouble of a motor swap for 30HP. IMHO spend the money and get a engine like the 5.7 HEMI that has a painless wiring kit already designed for it out of a salvaged truck.....should still meet your budget and your pushing 300HP instead of 200. Just my two cents. mr-green
there is a guy in Petaluma that will do the HEMI engine, tranny, exhaust, wiring system, larger alt and radiator...and anything else I forgot plus get it CA smoged for around 10K....it’s what I would like to do down the road...

You really don't want to know.

I'm confused...I didn't say what I'm putting in or pulling out. 30HP? No Jeep for me so I'm not tied to any particular motor and I'd be shocked to hear there's a wiring harness for the application I'm thinking. Maybe even a diesel swap. I figure the smell of diesel exhaust will be payback for the years of dust from turned down Jeep exhaust. 😀 Or I could run it on veggie oil and make everyone hungry for french fries. Thanks for the round number cost though. That's what I was looking for. 8)

$10K for a hemi is in my price range! The challenge is if I'm willing to give up my lifetime powertrain warranty...

In round numbers, $BOO,KOO USD,

Buy a wrecked donor vehicle because you will need every single emissions related hose, clamp and component, like the vacuum canister, factory air cleaner, cat converters, etc.

Assuming you are talking about a late model vehicle. You can build a vehicle and get it registered with SB100 and have no smog at all.

Todd at ( jeepspeed in peteluma ) said the JK's are much cheeper than the TJ's. Call and talk to him a little bit and go over the different equip options and he can give an OTD price or as he calls it a turn key price. I got a price for Hemi in the green jeep a few weeks ago, I think it was in the 10-13 range but would want (need) to replace the 231 with an atlas. Wiring harness that others I know have had good luck with have been from HotWires or their parent company Squire.

I'm thinking an FJ60 with a Tundra drivetrain. I'll have to look at prices on a wrecked Tundra. It'll probably never even come close to making sense but it sounds like a fun rig.

WOW, my head hurts just thinking about the wiring. Maybe a full dash transplant is in order.

I think it would be EASY. My Tundra had a very clean engine compartment. Common, how many wires CAN there be??? 😀

Definitely! How much could automobile technology have changed in the past 25 years? It's all metric bolts right?

You can find the wiring diagrams on the Autozone website. Last year, I transplanted a EFI Camaro engine. It took awhile to go through the wires, shorten and wrap them for my chosen computer location. For the most part, the engine wiring harness is self contained with only a dozen or so wires to the body electrical. Things like the dash wires for gauges, brake wire for cruise control, AC control switches, etc. I would suggest an additional fuse box for the engine wiring harness just for simplicity, and not touching the existing fuse box or body electrical.

Yep - so long as it's not a jeep!

That makes sense.

I've got to get one of your easy buttons. On my swap, the chassis and engine electrical had to be intergraded in order to pass safety check at the B.A.R. It had to be more than just clean smog wise. All systems from donor vehicle had to register correctly, all that OBD crap which includes the head unit.

That's a lot of lift. If I had sold the 4Runner a month or two earlier I'd have gone and looked at this one.

I was referencing the place because they specialize in fj60s and do motor swaps. Might be a good place to start your pricing.
