35x12.50 is pretty much considered a standard size. Kris can opine more here but in general wider tires offer better snow flotation, rim rock rash protection and better bead hold when airing down.
Narrower tires have advantages that are different.
I think rim width to tire width is an important consideration as well.

35x12.5r17 and metric 34s (315/70r17) are the most common and so will be cheapest but should be on a 8.5"+ width wheel. The narrower 10 and 11" tires are for the stock 7-7.5" wide wheels, will be more expensive, but will get slightly better gas mileage than a 12.5. You can run 12.5s on a factory width wheel but more likely to rub, 10% faster tire wear, and technically a reason for them to deny a tire warranty claim.
Paired with any 0mm or -12mm offset wheel, 35x12.5r17s work great.

Hi.I recently bought a Wrangler, did a body lift, changed the suspension a bit, now I'm wondering what tires to choose to start with. What tire size would be optimal for a beginner?
We need more information then that. What year and submodel (sport, Rubicon, ect) of Jeep? How much of a body lift? What kind of changes to the suspension? Stock rims or aftermarket? Those things all matter.
