I went by America's Tire today. They can't get any of the old style 35" MTR's any more. They'll replace my old MTR with the new kevlar MTR. I'm concerned about running the new tire with the old considering the size difference and my Detroit locker. They won't do anything for me to replace all the tires and suggest I call Goodyear.

The guy looked up the specs of the old and new 35" MTR's and they're both spec'd at 34.8". Has anyone heard if the new 35's are really sized differently than the old ones? If so can you point me to any information I could use? I plan to call Goodyear in the morning to see if they'll do anything for me.

Rob has a picture. We put his old style 37" next to a new style 35" and they were almost the same size. I wouldn't run them together as I bet there is an inch difference. You'd be better able to tell us how much bigger they are. I'd be interested in seeing a picture if it's possible.

I wonder if new 33's would be closer to old 35's?

I have a VERY bald 37 I could loan you if you're in a pinch. I'd guess it's probably smaller than most 35s at this point. 8)

Joe told me he had a connection for some 35's with about the same amount of wear on mine. Maybe I should get my one new kevlar MT/R unmounted for the future and pick up one of the one's Joe knows of for now.

I thought about that. I could go out with reckless abandon with the intent to destroy all my tires. Or maybe I should set up an obstacle course in the garage. 😈

Have you called a Goodyear store to see if they can locate an old 35 MTR somewhere in the US at one of their stores?

The guy at America's Tire tried to call but got a message saying to call between 8:00 and 5:00 eastern time. I plan to call them in the morning.

I just got off the phone with Goodyear, they weren't very helpful either. All I got out of them was to not mix old & new MT/R's on the same axle.

🙄 at least you can take that to the tire shop. Maybe they'll replace the other side under warranty. Then you'd at least have two.

I'm pretty much resigned to just getting the one tire and keep it as a spare.

I guess this is another good reason to replace the Detroit locker.

You'd still need two tires. Just based on the descriptions that I've heard there's enough difference that it could change handling even on an open axle.

No to mention when you throw it in 4WD. The transfer case might not like it when it's spinning a 33.5 inch tire in the front and a true 35 inch tire in the rear.

I ended up just getting one new kevlar MT/R to replace the punctured tire. I've got some measurements for you guys.

Both the old and new MT/R's are 35x12.5x15's mounted on 15x8" rims with 29.5 psi. The old MT/R was measured by America's Tire as having 18/32" tread so its not worn much. I believe new it had 21/32". According to America's Tire both the old and new tires are spec'd at 34.8" tall when new.

Height with no weight on it:
Old tire: 34 1/4"
New tire: 34 3/4"

Height installed on right rear of my Jeep:
Old tire: 33 1/2"
New tire: 34 1/8"
I suspect some of the difference in the loaded height could be because the new tire's sidewall has not been broken in.

Laying on the garage floor the new tire is about 1/4" wider than the old tire at their widest points.

I guess the 35s measure more true than the 37s.

How does it feel when you drive it? Does the Detroit notice the difference?

I didn't drive with it. I just put it on to get measurements.
