I am looking to put together a small parts kit to drag along on the trail. My old 4x4 was 1969 technology and since I have had my TJ for only a few months, I am not real familiar with some of the more troublesome small parts. I currently have the Dana 30/35 combo. 🙁 In addition to spare Dana 35 axleshafts and c-clips,what would you guys recommend for me to carry? Thanks for the help.

Recovery gear including tow strap, high lift jack and a winch (with synthetic rope) if you can afford it.
Tools
Shovel
Ratchet straps
Fluids
Clean-up kit
U-joints for axle and drivelines
Axle shafts
pitman arm
Hubs?
Bearings
Steering components including track bar (depending on style).
I used to wheel a lot. . .

I don't know about small but I carry and actually have had to use 90% of:
2 complete front axle shafts
Pittman arm
2 brake lines
2 axle u-joints
2 drive shaft u-joints
2 spare hubs
spare yoke
ARB switches, line, solenoids etc.
4 valve stems
tire plug kit and about 50 plugs
Couple different RE joints
spare tie rod ends
small ammo can full of nuts and bolts
2 quarts motor oil
2 quarts ATF
2 quarts brake fluid
2 quarts gear oil
small hand pump for above fluids
PB Blaster
Brake clean
2 tubes of RTV
Hi-lift jack.
enough tools to just about do anything I need to do except for welding etc.
I probably forgot something but that's what comes to mind right now.
I want to add a spare pan-hard bar since people seem to pretzel those often.

In addition to the normal tools and parts, I carry:
radiator stop leak
JB weld
mighty putty
duct tape
electrical tape
a few wire taps
spare fuses
a spare rear drive line.
I think you might also consider carrying the socket that fits your front D30 nut (I may have one to give you if I look for it).
I don't carry:
axle shafts
D60 u-joints
steering components other than a pitman arm

Just build a small tool kit and add in a random assortment from the lists above.
The law of averages should cover the group when you're on a run. For example, John can use my spare driveline if he needs it. I converted my bolt pattern to 5x5.5 for this same reason. Several people run this pattern so spares are easy to come by in an emergency.

Carry nuts and bolts that fit all your working suspension components. People always bring spare parts, but very few carry the bolts to re-attach them if they break. I always carry enough to re-attach anything on my Jeep that might break. Over the years I have always been generous and given nuts and bolts to people that didn't have them. I very seldom get the parts replaced or paid for. I don't give anything away anymore. My philosophy now is that if your don't have it and I do, pay for the item or hop in and I will give you a ride to the pavement
The hidden message here is to always bring about $100.00 in cash on the trail, you never know when you might need to buy a part from someone. I have bought many parts from people over the years or had to pay for welding services, etc!!!

I've had 4 people need the services of a welder I brought. I've never need to use the welder on my jeeps. However, I carry bolts but the size I needed was not in my bag. Fred bailed me out there. I generally don't have problems giving or sharing stuff, but replacing welding spool, or the borrowed bolts is a good idea (sorry Fred, I completely forgot about this)...

I have one that is unbreakable*.
* Warranty covers 100% of all use,miss-use and abuse between the sellers garage and end of driveway, or 100 yards, whichever is further...

The cash is really great advice. It will get you out of a lot of issues. I've used it on more than one occasion. You can't carry every part. I've also given away top shelf liquor in the past. The bottle ended up costing the guy several thousand bucks after he drank most of the "liquid courage". 😀
Do the rest of you guys really carry that much stuff on every run? I can see bringing it on Strawberry, but I rarely pack that heavy. I usually try to carry enough to reach pavement, not necessarily fix everything that breaks.

I carry too much. I've gone through my stuff several times and rarely take out more than a few zip ties, hose clamps or similar things. I just can't leave that stuff home because I know if go on a run without it it's sure to be the time I'll need it.

About 250lbs of stuff. Can't seem to leave without it. Depending on millage you might want to ck your idle and tensioner pulleys. Except for Sue I think most everyone has 50k or less on their JEEPS. You might want to carry one of those rad/heater hose repair kits and try to round up a spare unit bearing.

I always carry all that stuff. Let's see, John saved me with a pitman arm on the Sledghammer Trail in JV. Rob saved me twice on the Rubicon, once by giving me a brake line and then towing me from Buck Island to Loon Lake. Lee lent me a spare tire on the same trip so I could use the different lug pattern rear axle shaft that John and Larry were bringing from Loomis, then Tahoe, then Loon Lake. Then there was the whole club spending their day at Buck Island helping me pull my rear third member to get the broken axle out.
My point is that I have been helped a bunch of times and I felt like crap every time because I didn't feel prepared. So now I try to bring everything that I can and all the tools I might need. I always give out any spare parts, fluids, bolts etc. hoping it will come back around and so far it has.
