My RE track bar has about 1/8 " of play in the rebuildable end Is this normal or should I rebuild it. It is only $8 for the kit. I also need the special tool.( not the kind you are thinking) lol.

Any help is appreciated

Thanks

The track bar is a bad place to have any play. Fix it.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

John's right, it's time for a rebuild.

If it's the RE spherical joint you may just be able to tighten the preload on the bushings. I had an RE joint I was going to rebuild and went to RE for the parts and they're the ones who told me to tighten it.

I agree with Fred and John. You need to eliminate the play in the joint. That being said, it is more likely you only need to adjust the joint, rather than rebuild it. It takes tool. RE has a large size and and a small size. I carry both in my off road bag. I think the trackbar is the smaller size. It's quick and easy to do. two bolts to get the bar off, and then a socket wrench and the tool, plus a larger channel lock, I believe. Be sure to grease it really well after your done.

If you want to rebuild it, its also easy to do. The kit you buy has the nylon races and a new lock screw. I'm not sure what else is in there. If you do a rebuild, it's smart to use medium threadlock on everything so it doesn't loosen back up.

Good luck!

So are you saying I should rebuild the joint?

Just kidding. I am going to RE right now...

Thanks for the info.

Bender, I was accually thinking about welding the axle to the frame and get rid of springs all together. 😀

I went to RE and they said the same thing you guys did. Tighten it up a little. I figured since I would have it apart I might as well pop for the extra nine dollars and put in the plastic bushings. The rebuild went pretty easy. I used a large socket to gently tap out the old bushings, cleaned up the old grease, and tapped the new bushings in. It took less than an hour.

Did I hear work party? Well, I did just pick up a brand new shiny Tera Low 4:1. I'm thinking about putting it in on the Sunday March 1st. If any one were to show up,I would have to buy pizza and drinks. An extra set of hands would be a big help.

Thanks Bill

I'm on-call but you're in Folsom so I could most likely give you a hand. If my pager goes off I'd have to bail out though. I've never installed a Tera Low but have taken a few t-cases apart to install sye's.

I think I'm tied up that day, but it's a pretty simple thing to do. The direction explain it pretty well. The important thing is to make sure you get the shift fork in the right way or it will want to pop out of four low all the time. The hardest part is getting the pinion nut off. I had to take mine to a transmission shop to get it broke loose and put back on. Those things are on there like they don't want to come off.

I've got a compressor and air tools. If necessary we can go to my house to get the pinion nut off. Or if you want I can make room in the garage to work here. The only thing is we would have to get it done in one day so we can park the other vehicles in the garage at night, but I wouldn't expect that to be a problem.

It would be great if you came over. I have a compressor and an impact gun. So no need to clean out the garage. I'm glad to hear that the instal is pretty easy. As all ways 1 1/2 heads are better than one(I'm usually at about half power) 😀 Give me a call 916-765-3754.

Thanks a lot beer

Bill

I double checking to make sure you have top quality snap ring plyers - no harbor freight tools in this case.

Also, the pinion nut is easier to get off if you loosen it while the t-case is still in the vehicle. Don't wait until it's on the bench. It comes off real easy with air and a socket. I have the correct size, but I don't remember what it is. Also spray some WD-40 on it first, wait about 5 mins, and it should come right off...

When's the work party?

I'll be out of town for the next week and half. I should return next Thursday. That weekend is the road patrol.

I am planning on Sunday the first. I want to break in the gears on the snow patrol. Brad I haven't about the snap ring plyers. I have a set of channel locks that I did the AA SYE kit with. So I think they will work. Thanks for the Idea of removing the yoke on the vehicle. Sorry you cant make it.

I appreciate all the help.............
