Ok, a friend is looking at an 00 Wrangler. It's already built and cheap. However, one "feature" of the rig is that it appears to have a HP 44. I recall problems a prior club participant had, but wondered if anyone else has opinions on the strength/durability of the axle. It is running alloy shafts, a full floater kit, disk brakes, 4.88's, and an Ox locker.

Thoughts?

It sounds like you are saying it has the HP 44 in the rear ?

Yes. Sorry for oversite. This is a rear axle, HP44.

From what I recall, the HP axles run on the coast side of the gears in the rear, while LP axles run on the coast side of the gears in the front.

That's how I understand it to work.

I wouldn't want it...but then again...it depends on how good a deal the Jeep is over-all. If you are comparing apples to apples, then no way. But if the rest of the Jeep is a screaming deal, then I say, "why not? " It can be replaced later.

I used to wheel a lot. . .

Yes. In looking at pics, it looks like a HP60 with a full floater kit and disks in the rear!

He specified a 44, but it sounds like he doesn't know much about his jeep...

$7500 is a pretty good deal based on the lift, winch, cage, ARB, and axles...I would do it if the rest of the Jeep is in decent shape like the motor, tranny, and TC..$7500 is about what you would pay for a bone stock Jeep of that year..

He's buying it a lunch today. We'll see exactly what's on it when it shows up back here. I saw another pic that shows it has Mastercraft seats as well.

I'm wondering if the person selling isn't the person who built it and they just went to KBB not knowing what they have.

Good deal for your friend. 😀

I saw the jeep, and he did buy it.

It looks like a HPD44. The jeep needs some work, but has a lot of nice stuff on it. It has flush mount LED tail lights, steel corners, new 35" tires, a CB, full poison spyder cage, manual hubs, a front ARB, an ARB compressor, rock lights, a Warn M8274 winch, 4.88 gears, sliders, and other stuff.

Who hasn't done that. If it weren't for my wife taking up sooo much room on my bed, I would be spooning some beadlocks 😀

Um...what?

Yeah, but he was sleeping in his jeep for a different reason!

The jeep does have a HPD44. I don't have any ideas on the other details at this point however.
