Rubicon Trail Requirements

I stopped by Fresh Pond on my way to the Rubicon last weekend. They're giving away free wag bags and one of them had a brochure stapled to it. It looks like it's by the El Dorado County Parks & Recreation Department. One of the sections is titled "required equipment." It's all a good idea, but I didn't realize it was required. I'm assuming that means someone can enforce it. Since it was news to me, I figured I'd pass it on. The list is:
-Trash bags or similar for packing out trash
-Oil spill kid which includes oil spill pads (PIG Absorbent Ground Tarp or similar) and hydrocarbon clean up material (Zorbit Technologies Peat Sorb or similar) and disposal means for packing out contaminated material.
-Fire extinguisher and shovel.

I didn't know Parks & Rec had any jurisdiction over county roads.

I agree its a good idea to have all that stuff but to say it's a "requirement" doesn't seem appropriate.

I was a bit surprised that they want you to have both the pads and the peat stuff for an oil spill. I also tend to only carry a shovel in the winter. I guess I need to find a good spot to keep one with me all the time.

Good point. I have a nice small shovel, but I guess finding a mount for it now makes sense...

I think most of us do at this point, I just didn't realize that mine isn't up to snuff since it doesn't have the Peat Zorb stuff.

I used these to mount my shovel to my tire rack. They work really well. Also used them to mount my mag light to my seat frame.

There is a hole on the bottom and they come with a small piece of hardened plastic (with a hole in it) that fits over the hole.

It doesn't come with screws. I ended up using some self-tapping screws and a little bit of silicone on the bottom around the hole when I installed.

There are new signs at the Wentworth trailhead that say wag bags and spill kits are required. I carry both, so....

I used to wheel a lot. . .

You could certainly tie them to the back of your rig when you're done, but I don't want to follow you. lol :puke:

I got my spill kit from the kiosk at the Loon Lake entrance to the trail. I'm not sure where you can buy it at?

I used to wheel a lot. . .
