This is a reminder to all new and old club members that we have safety rules that must be followed. This is also good information for new people looking to join the club.
Vehicle Requirements (for each Official Member’s vehicle):
Be in good working condition. Vehicles with known mechanical problems are discouraged from attending runs.
Have current vehicle registration and be street legal or current “Green Sticker” for strictly off-road vehicles.
Maintain current valid vehicle insurance.
Have front and rear recovery points.
Have a jack capable of lifting the vehicle.
Have a full size spare tire. No “temporary” or “donut” spares allowed.
Have properly functioning seat belts or restraints for all occupants of the vehicle.
Have a fire extinguisher on board.
Have an approved recovery strap (Rope or chains is not considered an acceptable alternative to an appropriate strap).
I might also add that a very important safety rule is good general driving habits, respect for the trails, and listening to your spotters and more experienced wheelers.
I think things have become a little lax in this department lately and there is always a possibility of a vehicle inspection before membership is approved or before a club run for all vehicles.

I went back to confirm and see that you pulled the info from the by-laws, which is a great refresher. I haven't looked them over in a while.
I also see some "nice to have items":
First Aid Kit
Hi-Lift type jack.
Winch
Air system capable of inflating a tire to street pressure.
Tools
These all are good points too! I always carry a first aid kit.

Another thing that isn't mentioned in the bylaws, but probably should be added is that the vehicle should have good tires. No bald tires or mismatched sizes. Making the trails often come down to good tires and having good tires will save the rest of the group a lot of headaches.

Though not in the by-laws I think that's a good common sense suggestion.

That way it gives everyone an idea of what they should be prepared for.
My 2 cents.
Not a bad idea. I think we have some kind of rating system. Let me chack on that.

I have my own opinion, but the bylaws say full sized. I think it should at least be close and useable. I have a 37" spare and I run 38" tires. Close enough to get me off the trail without any issues. I can still use 4WD and my lockers if I had to, and not tear up my rig in the process.

Too much government for my taste. If a person doesn't want a spotter and wants to figure out the line for themselves as long as their not hurting anyone else go for it. Especially if your rig isn't a "cookie cutter" Jeep. I have a very clear memory of a time when I should have told a spotter to pound sand. The driver is always in charge of their vehicle and responsible for it. Everyone just needs to operate it safely. The goal should be to develop into the type of driver that rarely needs a spotter.

I totally agree. I was talking more about when safety is an issue, which is why it was mentioned as a safety issue 😛

The officers could go through them section by section and then present the revised documents at club meetings for member approval! 😀
I don't see any major overhaul needed. Use or follow what we have.... Just need to decide if that needs to be someone's job if it isn't all of our jobs as members?

Sure. You and I are fine based on the posted by-laws. However, according to our by-laws member status requries a Cal4Wheel membership. I don't think our President has a current Cal4Wheel membership.
You and I are ok, becuase we joined Cal4Wheel voluntarily, but our by-laws state something specific! Time for an update?
In our by-laws: "CA4WD fees are required for active membership as well. Membership dues are paid separately, but must be current as part of the active-status requirement. "
See what happens when John starts a safety thread and cites the by-laws!!!

So are we going by whats close to the by-laws? Spirit of the law vs. letter of the law?
Um...what?
